JUST ONE OF THOSE THINGS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, even though the title of yesterday’s notes was “Lollygagging,” there was certainly no lollygagging on this here site. Not only was there no lollygagging on this here site, but we had our second best posting day ever. It was just one of those things, just one of those crazy flings. We simply got off on a tangent (thanks to edisaurus) and we never stopped. For those of you who were errant and truant and off doing other very important things, if you have any sense at all you will check out all the posts from yesterday, all thirty-seven or so pages of them, because they are truly amusing – some even downright or upleft hilarious. This really was the place to be yesterday – of course, we feel that this is the place to be every day, but yesterday was something wholly other. Speaking of wholly other, the rest of yesterday was quite nice, too. For example, I woke up. That was quite nice. I just puttered around the home environment for a while, then took a nice drive. At least I think I took a nice drive – I really can’t remember. I got some writing done and I read lots and lots of amusing postings, and even contributed a little. I ate a Subway Club, some cookies, some chips, some scrambled eggs, and a bagel. I didn’t really sit on my couch like so much fish because the TV needs a new lamp and no one in the city of Los Angeles, California, USA carries it in stock, so it has to be ordered today from the manufacturer, and then it takes a day or two to get here and then I, BK, have to install it.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Ulzana’s Raid, a film of Robert Aldrich, starring Mr. Burt Lancaster, a very young Bruce Davidson, and many of the Aldrich regulars. I’ve had the region 1 DVD since 1999, when it came out, but I never watched it because it was full frame – since I’d never seen the film I certainly wasn’t about to watch it in an incorrect ratio. I kept it because it seems to go for a lot of moolah these days. But I recently got a region 2 DVD and it’s anamorphic and in its correct ratio of 1:85. I must say, Ulzana’s Raid is quite a compelling western. It’s also very violent with some pretty repellent imagery. It’s quite powerful, with excellent performances and nice photography. Not quite a classic, but excellent nevertheless. I would not recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have a stomach for strong violence (the film was made in 1972, but some of it is still really quite strong), or if you are a horse lover (I think this was made prior to animal rights people having to approve what can and can’t be done in films – so there is a lot of tripping of horses, and some of it looks way too real and way too out of control). The transfer is great – nice and sharp, and with perfect color.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because, after all, this is the official start of this week, after the holiday of yesterday.

Have I mentioned that yesterday was just one of those things, just one of those crazy flings? I wonder if today will be just one of those things, just one of those crazy flings? I wonder if tonight will be just one of those nights, just one of those fabulous flights? Only time will tell, and time isn’t talking.

Today, I must ship a few packages, I must write a few pages, I must gather some research, I must make some telephonic calls, I must answer some e-mails, and I must do a plethora of other things that need attending to. I also have to start making arrangements for Friday’s CD release party. The RSVP list is growing, and I think it will really be fun.

This week I also have to have a few meetings with my singers, and we’ll be continuing the process of choosing material and working on arrangements.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, ship packages, jog (weather permitting), and order a lamp for the TV. Today’s topic of discussion: What is the last extravagant thing you bought for yourself, something that while maybe not even that expensive, you just wanted and went ahead and got, despite the fact that you might not have really even needed it? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and remember, it was just one of those things, just one of those crazy flings.
