ABSINTHE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, enough with these days flying by like a gazelle with a cold sore. I would like one week that goes slowly, like a gazelle eating a licorice twist. Just one week, that’s all I ask. One week where I can stop and smell the roses or the coffee or the absinthe. Isn’t the expression absinthe makes the heart grow fonder? I mean, here it is, Wednesday already and before you know it it will be Thursday and then Friday and like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives. Speaking of absinthe yesterday was a non-stop day filled with non-stop things. For example, I got up. That was non-stop. I then had to de-groggify, dress, and then head over to rehearsal with Miss Merissa Haddad. We ran the show, I gave notes, we had another run of just the patter, and then I toddled off to pick up The Creature Wasn’t Nice CDs. After that, I had to drive into Hollywood for a meeting with the president of LACC. But, just prior to that I’d heard from my muse Margaret, who’d read the last batch of pages and was very happy with them. She had three little comments, so I made a note of them. The meeting went very well, with lots of intriguing and interesting things being discussed. After the meeting, I returned home, where I made the three fixes and then read them to Margaret – she professed them fine, and now, except for proofing, I am through with the book. I then excitedly went to Staples to print out a couple of copies – my usual gal wasn’t there and the fellow who attended to me didn’t really seem interested in being helpful – that, coupled with the fact that their velo-binding machine was down (as well as their replacement velo-binding machine). He had no idea when it would be fixed. I’ll be discussing that very thing first thing in the morning with a manager. I’m hoping my gal will be there, because she’s usually helpful in that regard. After that, I finally came home, where I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled 36 Quai des Orfevres, a French film from 2004 that has never had a US release, despite being a film American audiences would take to. It’s written and directed by a former cop, one who’s a little too enamored of Mr. Michael Mann. His story is good, his actors are great, but his direction is filled with those annoying American touches that I do loathe so much – same with the awful overbearing sound mix filled with those pointless industrial sounds that have no meaning. Still, the story is a good one, and the stars, Daniel Autuiel and Gerard Depardieu, are really top-notch, as is the supporting cast. The reason the film didn’t receive a US release is simple – the rights were bought for an American remake and the deal in these cases is that the original film is kept out of the US, which is why we never saw L’Appartement here because of the awful Wicker Park. The US remake will star Robert De Niro and George Clooney, and I predict it will be as terrible as most of these remakes of superior films are.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below, because absinthe makes the heart grow fonder and I want to stop and smell the absinthe instead of watching yet more days fly by like a gazelle eating gefilte fish.

This morning I shall go directly to Staples, after which I shall attend a two-hour rehearsal, our first with our pianist. After that, we’ll all go over to Vitello’s to get Merissa used to the actual space she’ll be working in – especially because the stage area is so tiny. After that, I think I just might be free for a while, although I do have to package up a few orders and get them shipped out.

Tomorrow I shall be getting a haircut, at long last. I have been very unkempt and I am weary of it. Tomorrow night, we have a dress rehearsal for invited people, so if you know anyone in LA who’d like to get a free sneak peek at Merissa’s act, let me know. We’ll be at the Madelyn Clark studios and we’ll begin at eight.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, print out a book (velo-binding permitting), rehearse an act, visit a club, ship some packages, and then have some time to stop and smell the roses and the coffee and the absinthe. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we? We shall.
