April 19, 2007:

FRENCHING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this month is flying by like a gazelle in a wet suit. How is this possible? How can it be April 19th? Well, as the French say, c’est la vie. I’m feeling French, you know, on account of seeing all these French films at the French film festival. Whilst standing in line and then sitting in the DGA theater, one hears all manner of actual French people speaking actual French. I then begin speaking in an impeccable French accent, too, and say pithy things like “parapluis” “Dimanche” “baiser” “demoiselles” “les yeux sans visage” – that’s the French I know, all words from movie titles. I’m quite loud when I speak French and no one has a clew as to what the HELL I’m talking about or who, in fact, I’m talking to. I say “voila” a lot – you’d think from all the heads that turn my way when I say it that there are many people named Voila. Speaking of voila, yesterday was quite a voila day. For example, I woke up and immediately said voila. I then answered some e-mails, packaged a few more orders, and then shipped the whole kit and caboodle (along with the packages). I then came home and wrote the proposal I needed to write, and then sent it off. I then had to package up more orders, and then it was time to toddle off to sup at the California Pizza Kitchen at Sunset and Crescent Heights – the new Chucky Cheese for parents and kids. After supper, I went to the DGA, where the early show was letting out. It’s very confused there in the lobby and this festival is completely disorganized. They finally told us where the line would form – I was in the front of it. People get there really early, more than an hour before show time. At seven forty the line was all the way out the door (and the DGA has a HUGE lobby). The DGA theater manager told me he wanted to open the doors right then and I said that was a great idea. He then talked to the smug, young SOB that let in all those people before letting us in the previous night – that guy, who’d disappeared to get some food, basically wasn’t planning to open the doors until 8:10 for an 8:30 show. The DGA guy was clearly annoyed at him and told me that he was. He finally agreed to open the house at 8:00 but then he got pressure from the DGA guy again, as well as a security guard. He then had to call someone to see if he could open the doors (I mean, really), and they finally opened them at 7:50. I found out the smug SOB’s name (Aaron), and tomorrow I will be speaking to one of his superiors about the way he’s doing things.

Last night’s French motion picture entertainment was entitled Priceless, a new film (coming out here in November via Samuel Goldwyn), and stars Audrey Tatou. Its director’s last film was the amusing but not quite successful Aprez Vous, which I wrote about after watching it. This film is also amusing but not quite successful, mainly because it is too long (two hours) and too slight for that running time. It’s just a lot of variations on the same scene – sometimes the variations are amusing and charming and sometimes they just sit there like so much fish. The actors are all fine. One question that comes to mind about every single film I see these days is why are directors only making films in scope? They have no reason to – it certainly doesn’t seem to be artistically motivated, since they don’t have any idea what scope is about – they basically just frame everything for the center of the image. It’s baffling.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst we all say voila.

Today, I shall continue my second proofing, I shall eat an early meal, since I have two count them two French motion pictures to see today – one at four-thirty, the other at seven-thirty. I also have some errands to run and packages to ship.

Tomorrow, I’ll be attending day one of the Ray Courts show, and will see MBarnum, I’m sure. I’ll plan on spending a few hours there, and then I have a five o’clock screening of a French film to attend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, try to jog, proof, ship, and attend two French motion picture entertainments. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite French foods. Where did you eat your favorite French meal of all-time? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? Merci. Bon. Voila.
