JUNE MOON

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, you won’t believe it. I can barely believe it myself and yet I must for it is true. And just what is it that you and I won’t believe but must? Well, I’ll tell you because why should I withhold such information from the likes of you dear readers? It is June. I ask you, where else on all the Internet can you get such information? Nowhere, that’s where. Yes, June is bustin’ out all over and this year is almost half over. I mean, bowl me over with a slotted spoon if it isn’t June. I’ll shout it in the morning and I’ll shout it at noon – it’s June. Yes, June came all too soon but what can you do but croon June’s tune. Call me a crazy, call me a loon, call me what you May, because it’s June. Frankly, I’m a goon for June. I’m over the moon for June. I’m a veritable rhyming dictionary, aren’t I? But that’s what June does to me. June Moon, that’s the way it is around these here parts. In any case, let’s all just send the most excellent vibes and xylophones for everyone to have a wonderful, comfortable, healthy, happy, and prosperous June, with an emphasis on the latter. Speaking of the latter, the final day of May was certainly a day. I don’t really remember too much of it. Oh, I remember that I slept late again, then had to do a bunch of stuff, then jog, then spent a couple of hours going over my script and songs, then had an alumni association meeting, then had a dinner meeting at which I ate way too much pizza. I came home to a lovely e-mail from our very own Mr. Brent Barrett, who will be joining our cast of players for our November fundraiser show at the Alex. It was lovely to hear from him and he’s happy to be joining Alice Ripley, Kevin Spirtas, and Bruce Vilanch. I hope to have more names soon. After all that, I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Hollywood Or Bust, a Martin and Lewis comedy directed by Frank Tashlin. Like Artists and Models, this one has some of those classic Tashlin moments. It’s not as funny as Artists and Models, but it’s fun. I wish more of it took place in Hollywood, but it’s basically a road picture, with Dean and Jerry (and then the cute-as-a-button Pat Crowley) driving across country from New York to Hollywood. There are some fun in-jokes, and the cast is fun. The Las Vegas scenes are interesting if you only know Vegas from the last fifteen years. There is a wonderful shot of the strip – everything flat as a pancake – no big buildings in sight. The scene with Jerry at the craps tables is really fun. The transfer is the weakest in the box set – the registration is really off for most of it, so while the color is quite accurate the whole thing is soft and occasionally really out of focus. It could also be a bit brighter. These VistaVision Technicolor features should be sharp as a pin and the color should pop out like nobody’s business. None of the transfers in this set are razor sharp, although the color is, for the most part, fine.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below just because it’s June, June, June.

Not only is it June, and not only will I eat a dried prune, but it is also Friday. My goodness, this week has flown by like a gazelle on the half shell.

Today, I shall take part in a music rehearsal for ninety minutes, otherwise the day is pretty much mine. There are several movies being shown at rep theaters that I’d like to see, but since I have an early and long rehearsal tomorrow, I think I’ll play it safe and stay home and watch a DVD or three. Prior to the rehearsal, I’ve got a few errands to attend to, and after the rehearsal, I’ll have a couple more errands to do.

Tomorrow, I have a rehearsal from ten to four. I do hope that whatever blocking and movement we get is perfunctory because my character never shuts up and there’s no way to take my eyes off the script (I have to highlight my script today, too, as well as put the sheet music where it belongs in the script) and I don’t want to have to think about where I walk when. If it’s simple, like The Last Starfighter reading was, then it’ll be fine. After rehearsal, I’m going to try to make it to the Pasadena Book Fair.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, rehearse, do errands and whatnot, and then watch a DVD or three and relax and prepare for the very busy upcoming week. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, a two CD set of The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T that I was given years ago. What a delight. DVD, Martin and Lewis, and Samuel Fuller’s Fixed Bayonets. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we celebrate a little month we like to call June, a month of rhyme and good cheer, not necessarily in that order. Moon June. June Moon.
