MR. CONDUCTOR, IF YOU PLEASE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am writing these here notes in a hurry because shortly I shall be on my way to New York, New York to begin rehearsals for The Brain From Planet X, a musical comedy. So, I’m going to post these here notes early and try to get at least six hours of sleep before I arise at 3:45 in the morning. So, Mr. Conductor, if you please – da da DA da da da. What am I, Gypsy all of a sudden? Frankly, I feel twitchy and bitchy and manic and am so excited about starting rehearsals. Yes, I feel twitchy and bitchy and manic, but alive, but alive, but alive. What am I, Lauren Bacall all of a sudden? What a thrill to be coming to New York, New York to do my first musical comedy, and also to be making my directorial debut. Although I always considered that I was more of a CD director than a CD producer – you know, making little movies for the ear. But this is entirely different. Speaking of entirely different, yesterday was just about the exact day I was hoping it would be. I love when that happens. I woke up early, got a few things done, then went to LACC and got the check that was waiting for me. I came home and picked up my dry cleaning, and then basically did all my packing, saving only a few things for later in the day. I then got some most excellent news about our show, which I’ll go into more detail about in tomorrow’s notes. I also had a wonderful conversation with our new costume designer, and, like our set designer, she is a real problem solver instead of a worrier and a problem maker. She loves the show and can’t wait to get started. We have a meeting early on Monday, before our first day of blocking begins. I then went to the mail place and was happy to find that the two checks I was worried about not arriving before I left were indeed there, as were my new pair of sneakers, which are quite spiffy and which I will wear in New York, New York. After that, I did some more errands, did my banking, jogged, and then had some dinner. I finished the last of my packing and got all my papers organized and packed, too. I thought the suitcase was going to be very light, but with the big check register and the script, it’s actually heavier than it’s ever been. After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture that I TIVOd quite some time ago, entitled Beyond A Reasonable Doubt, a film of Mr. Fritz Lang, starring Mr. Dana Andrews, Miss Joan Fontaine, Mr. Sidney Blackmer and others. The film is an extremely low budget affair, but I like it a lot – for me, Mr. Lang can do little wrong. The acting is good, the plot is certainly a grabber, and it’s a fine little B-movie that probably could have been even better with a bigger budget.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below – Mr. Conductor, if you please – da da DA da da da!

As noted in the notes, I shall be arising very early and then I shall be on my way to the airport. I’m hoping that my wireless issues have been fixed and then I’ll be able to post from the President’s Club. I shall then fly to New York, New York and land at Newark, and I’m hoping I can get a cab very quickly and get into the city as quickly as possible, so that I have a few minutes to unpack and get the laptop hooked up and working. Then I shall toddle off to a casting session, after which I shall meet Mr. Cason Murphy and Mr. Benjamin (BJ) Clark for a late supper at Joe Allen.

Tomorrow, music rehearsals begin. I’m hoping we’ll be fully cast, but if we aren’t, we’ll have mostly everyone and I’m sure it will be a productive day. On Friday, we do our official meet and greet and read-through, then it’s more music learning. Friday night, I’m seeing Miss Merrill Grant in her Fringe show, and then Saturday we have more music rehearsals. After Saturday’s rehearsal, I do the apartment switch. Sunday there’s a production meeting, and Monday we begin blocking and getting the show on its feet. Happily, Miss Adriana Patti, who is the keeper of the blocking, will be flying in on Sunday to assist me for one week.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, get a few hours of sleep, go to the airport, fly to Newark, and then come into the city and get settled in to the apartment, and then it’s a two-hour casting session then, finally, dinner. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings (I shall answer all questions as soon as the laptop is up and running), shall we? Mr. Conductor, if you please – da da DA da da da.
