OUTRE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I got waylaid by a three-hour movie, so now I must write these here notes in a hurry but don’t you worry, I shall scurry and write them in a flurry even though my eyes are blurry – perhaps if I had some curry and took some dance lessons from Arthur Murray. My goodness, I just had a rhyming frenzy, didn’t I? I was on a rhyming tear and rhymes were pouring out of me like a gazelle after eating too many refried beans. Well, that was outré, wasn’t it? This whole vibe seems outré, but I think we can attribute that to the three-hour movie, about which more in the next paragraph. Speaking of the next paragraph, yesterday was quite the little day, oh, yes, it was quite the little day. I got up early, did a few little things, then got my little self in gear and toddled over to Jon Frieda to have Teddy redo my do, which he did with his usual stylish stylings. After that, I hurried home for reasons that escape me. Reasons are always escaping me and frankly, I don’t know what to do about it. Where was I? Oh, yes, I came home, and then really decided that I was going to finish preparing the big box o’ stuff I’m sending ahead to New York, New York. I went and bought all the toiletries I’ll need, packed up quite a few clothes that I’ll need (the rest will go in my small suitcase), and the box is now ready save for two items, which I’ll put in on Monday morning. I’ll then take Ye Olde Boxe to Ye Olde Fed Ex and overnight it to our general manager’s office, from whence Cason will pick it up on Tuesday. That made me feel very ahead of the game and calmed me down, so it was very much worth it. I then did a little work on the show I’m mentoring, which was fun and went well. I then answered e-mails and such, and then, finally, went out and grabbed a bite to eat. After that, I took two big bags of trade material to Amoeba and got a bunch of Bossa Nova CDs, as I’m still on my Bossa Nova kick. The first one I played on the way home was a home run – Marcus Valle, with arrangements by Eumir Deodato. Fantastico. I then came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a three-hour motion picture entitled Inland Empire, a film by David Lynch. They should have called this film David’s Greatest Hits, as it is filled with his trademark weirdnesses. As most of you know, I’m a big fan of Mulholland Drive – for whatever reasons, that film just had it all for me, starting with one of the best acting performances I’ve seen in decades – Naomi Watts. I know it’s a hard to fathom film for a lot of folks, but I sort of got on its wavelength the first time out, and subsequent viewings have only deepened my enjoyment of the film. Inland Empire, however, has a few problems. Apparently, I didn’t get on its wavelength the first time out, although it does have certain similarities to Mulholland Drive. The acting, as always in Mr. Lynch’s films, is terrific, especially Miss Laura Dern. But the film’s biggest problem and one, for me, that does it in, was shooting on digital video. About half the film is so dark that you literally cannot see anything on the screen but little bits of movements. Digital video, at least this digital video, doesn’t have the detail, the depth of film, and the lighting, which looks like it was done as if it were film, just doesn’t work on digital video. Part of what makes Mr. Lynch’s films so dreamlike, is their film quality, and the digital video just robs it of that. That said, I never took my eyes off the screen for three solid hours. It’s hard to tell if the transfer is good or bad – I have no idea what this looked like in the theater, but what’s on my screen looked quite poor.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m feeling quite outré and David Lynchian and I may start doing weird things for incomprehensible reasons.

I think because I did all that I did yesterday, that today is a total day off for me, which I’m thrilled about. I have several movies to view, lots of Bossa Nova to listen to, and a few things I need to do at the piano and then the computer. I shall jog, I shall have a light repast, and that’s all, folks.

Tomorrow, I have an early meeting, which I’m sure will last about two hours. Then I’ll have several errands to do, and I may be getting together with the fundraiser’s musical director to routine the opening number, which I’m very excited about. It will happen tomorrow or Tuesday. Speaking of our fundraiser, our latest additions to our ever-lovely cast are two gals from the LA company of Wicked, Misty Cotton, Terry Trotter, and the delightfully delightful Miss Sara Rue.

Tuesday, of course, will be a crazy day, with lots of last-minute stuff to attend to, but I’ll try to be through with everything that needs doing by four, so I can really relax and just calm myself and get a good night’s sleep before my early-morning Wednesday flight to New York, New York.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do very little other than watch DVDs, listen to Bossa Nova, and eat light foodstuffs. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we close the notes with the outré story of The Randy Vicar and The Cheese Omelet.
