August 1, 2007:

WE NEED A LITTLE AUGUST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have exciting news. And just what is this exciting news I have? Well, I’ll tell you what this exciting news I have is, for why should I keep such things from the likes of you dear readers? The exciting news I have is that it is August. I ask you, where else on all the Internet can you find such news? Nowhere, that’s where. In any case, it is August and I’m hoping against hope that August is a wonderful month for all of us in every possible way. Yes, we need a little August, right this very minute – what am I, Jerry Herman all of a sudden? In any case, we bid a fond farewell to July, and now it is August and August is the beginning of a very big two months for the likes of us. First, a trip to New York, New York to cast The Brain From Planet X. Then, finish casting the fundraiser (for which we pray we’ll have funds), setting the songs and keys, and all that kind of stuff. Then it’s off to New York for a close to six week stay, to rehearse and then perform The Brain at the Acorn Theatre. Here’s what we don’t need in August: Negativity. Annoyances. Grief. Worry. We shall banish all of those to the four corners of the earth. What we do need in August is happiness, prosperity, health, creativity, fun, and for everything that needs to work out to work out. So, here are most excellent vibes and xylophones for the latter. Speaking of the latter, yesterday was an okay end of July. For example, I got up early. That was okay. I then answered e-mails, made telephonic calls, packaged up a few things, signed yet another contract, wrote a horrifying number of large checks for NYMF and various Brain-related items. I then did a bunch of errands, shipped, Fed Exed, and made yet more telephonic calls. I ate some foodstuffs, too, and then finally toddled off to Mr. Grant Geissman’s to enter the final set of corrections, which we did in about an hour. A cursory look at the fixed version tells me that it looks like we caught and fixed everything except two minor little bad breaks, so I’ll call him this morning and do those over the phone, and then he can get that to the publisher. I do love the cover of the book, and Grant did a great job with the back cover, too. The only thing left for me to do is the flap copy, so I’ll attend to that this very day. After that, I finally came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I began watching a strange motion picture entertainment on DVD entitled Jeanne Eagles, starring Miss Kim Novak, Mr. Jeff Chandler, and Miss Agnes Moorehead. It’s Miss Novak’s fourth or fifth film, and she’s never looked more beautiful. The film is directed by the erratic but always interesting George Sidney and it’s a highly fictionalized account of the life of actress Jeanne Eagles, which is why, I suppose, the film is entitled Jeanne Eagles. The character as presented in the film is not too endearing, at least not in the first hour, which is all I’ve watched. Miss Novak seems a little over her head, but she’s just so beautiful to look at that it really doesn’t matter. I’ll have a full report when I’m finished watching it.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because we need a little August, right this very minute, everything we’re needing, we’ll just go and win it!

Today will be a day of doing things. I have a lot of stuff to attend to, including writing flap copy, talking to a lovely actress who’s a potential Joyce in The Brain, meeting with the fundraiser’s musical director to see where we are people and song-wise and to set up a casting session for the ensemble upon my return. I have to take stuff to the dry cleaners so that I have lots of lovely clothing for the upcoming trip. Yesterday, I received the keys to the apartment I’m staying in – a lot of keys. Apparently, there is a key for everything – the front door, the mail box, the elevator, and the apartment door. Everything will be sparklingly sparkling I’m told and I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like. It’s a great location – 55th Street between Eighth and Ninth.

After all that, I’ll then be toddling off to the Music Center to dine with the Wechters and then see Jersey Boys at the Ahmanson. I will, of course, have a full report for you upon my returning for which I know you’ll be yearning.

Tomorrow, I have a ton of stuff to do – I must make sure everything is ready for my trip, and I must finish everything that needs finishing. Friday, I’ll have a work session for a couple of hours, but that’s about it, I think, and Saturday I’ll do nothing but relax and get ready and I shall endeavor to get to bed at a reasonable hour, since I have to be at the airport no later than five-thirty in the morning.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, write, drive about in my motor car, meet, eat, and see Jersey Boys. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and let’s not forget that we need a little August right this very minute.
