THE THIRD BRAIN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by like a gazelle eating an oyster roll. And today we do our fourth performance of The Brain From Planet X, at the totally weird time of 4:30 in the afternoon. As of now, it’s a light audience, but we’re hoping to pick up some reservations in the morning, along with some traffic at the door. If not, we’ll just play to whoever is there. I’m told that most NYMF shows in the larger venues are having trouble filling these late-afternoon shows. You know, I’ve got to just say this here and now and also now and here – can someone please post a photograph of a fershluganah gazelle eating an oyster roll? I just think we all need to see that, don’t you? I think we all need to have a visual aid for that, don’t you? Is the gazelle the official mascot of haineshisway.com? Or, conversely, is haineshisway.com the official mascot of the gazelle? What the HELL am I talking about? There are times, dear readers, when it is apparent that I have flipped Ye Olde Lid. Speaking of Ye Olde Lid, yesterday was an interesting day. For example, I woke up. That was interesting. I then had to shave and shower, do some work on the computer, then toddle off to the Acorn to see if our sound issues had been dealt with. Upon my arrival, I was assured that the sound issues had indeed been dealt with, but, and it’s a big but, our show disc had never been saved properly, so most settings had been lost. We got a new blend on the band, and I was told that the board op would be setting new levels on the cast both before and during the show. At one, the show began. We had about eighty people in attendance and for some reason most of them were all sitting on the right hand side of the auditorium, which made the auditorium completely unbalanced. But, then I feel we have a completely unbalanced show (in a good way), so they complemented each other. The band blend sort of went away in the first number, and I sent word back at intermission that the reed needed to come up in the mix – we weren’t getting any reinforced sound on him, therefore he was almost non-existent. The audience was very nice, and the show was good. As I’ve been saying every day (I’m sure everyone is bored to tears hearing it), this cast is dreamy – everyone is doing a terrific job and it’s a real treat to watch them strut their stuff, from the biggest parts to our hard-working and wonderful ensemble who really keep the show moving and energized.

We had some wonderful folks in the audience, including Miss Liz Callaway and her ever-lovin’ Dan, Miss Emily Skinner, Miss Juliana Hansen, Scott and Barbara Siegel, Jonathan Rayson, Miss Karen, elmore, and several other interesting folk. They all seemed to like the show very much and, in fact, I got a very sweet e-mail from Miss Skinner who professed she thought it the best NYMF production she’s ever seen – that was a nice thing to come home to. She, too, loved the entire cast. Since there was a show after us, we had to tear down very quickly in even less time than we normally have because the show went up seven minutes late and the intermission went five minutes over. The sound was better – not perfect, but better, although the prerecorded cues were way too low. Also, there was a bulb out in one of the moving lights, so that’s slated to be fixed for today’s show. All in all, The Third Brain was a good show, I think.

After the show, a few of us went out for drinks, then I came home, did some work, then toddled off to the Brooklyn Diner for supper with Cason, Miss Karen, Jose, and Alet.
I ate way too much food and felt quite uncomfortable – the humidity is back full-force, so I couldn’t wait to get back to the apartment and the cool river breeze wafting it way in through Ye Olde Window.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because the time is nigh for me to get my beauty sleep.

As mentioned, today we do our fourth performance. I know there will be some fun folks in attendance, including dear reader Jeanne. I’m sure we’ll all go sup afterwards, which will be fun. Then tomorrow we have a day off, and I shall ship box number two back to LA and only keep what’s absolutely necessary to get through the next few days. Friday we have another of these 4:30 specials, Saturday we’re off and then Sunday is our closing performance, which should be fairly full. It looks like I’ll be seeing Noel’s show of its opening night, and FJL’s show on Saturday matinee. I’m looking forward to both.

I may have great news regarding a performer for our fundraiser – I’m hoping to get said news tomorrow or the next day and once it’s for certain I’ll spill the beans right here at haineshisway.com. Of course, then there will be beans everywhere, but that’s what comes of spilling the beans.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, sleep in, do stuff, then attend a late-afternoon matinee and then sup with some hainsies/kimlets and perhaps hopefully spill the beans. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, as we prepare for The Fourth Brain.
