October 3, 2007:

A DAY TO BE RECKONED WITH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, today will be a day to be reckoned with. I don’t know what that means, but I like the sound of it. Frankly, there’s not enough reckoning going on in the world and today is as good a day as any to begin some serious reckoning. So far, October has been very annoying, and if I might make a suggestion to October, knock it off, or you will be getting a swift kick in the butt cheeks and I will severely bitch-slap you from here to eternity and hell and back. October is supposed to be a nice, positive, friendly month, so we’ll forgive you the first two days as long as we get back on track this very day – for if you don’t this will, as stated, be a day to be reckoned with. Speaking of reckoned, yesterday was not a day to be reckoned with. It was, however, a mass of unrepentant annoyances, with a handful of nice occurrences thrown in for good measure (3’5″). For example, I got up. That was a nice occurrence. I got about eight hours of sleep, but I also had slept about three hours during the evening – each time I put on a movie, I fell asleep immediately, sometimes for the length of the entire movie, sometimes only for half the movie. I got up, was immediately inundated with e-mails to answer, then the telephonic device began ringing and that was the day. I talked to at least thirty people, e-mailed even more, did some errands and whatnot and then came home to the most annoying e-mail of them all regarding our second payment for our fundraiser. I am now on the verge of canceling the show, depending on what happens by noon today. If things get straightened out to my satisfaction, then we’ll tough it out and do the show. If things are only semi-straightened out then I will think about rescheduling for late January. If they continue down the path they’re going down, I will simply cancel and then make known loud and clear as to why we’re canceling. I do think I’m not going to get sick, so that was a good thing. I ate some hot dogs for my meal o’ the day, and I’d forgotten I still had a couple of Cherry Ripes in the freezer, so I ate one of those for dessert. It wasn’t until about seven-thirty in the evening that I was finally able to sit on my couch like so much fish, but even then I was interrupted by two long telephonic calls.

Last night, I finished watching a motion picture on DVD entitled Funny Face, starring Miss Audrey Hepburn, Mr. Fred Astaire, and Miss Kay Thompson. As I stated in the posts when I began watching this new special edition DVD, I have never “gotten” Funny Face, try as I have over the years. I’ve watched it numerous times always to the same result: I don’t like it. It’s certainly an amazing cast, a terrific director, lovely photography, and glorious Gershwin songs in excellent arrangements. But, for me, the film just sits there like so much fish. The plot is thinner than Miss Hepburn (and that’s pretty thin), and there’s something singularly irritating about the whole leaden concoction. I know others love the film, but I’m afraid I’m not one of them. Certainly Miss Hepburn is lovelier than lovely, certainly Mr. Astaire is his usual self (and even in middle age dances divinely), but I do find Kay Thompson a trial to watch. The Paris locations are pretty, and the film moves along at a steady and not-overlong clip, but it just refuses to engage me and I sit there not understanding why I’m not enchanted. I remember thinking that the first DVD looked pretty good, but a quick comparison with this new transfer reveals that the old DVD was awful – too dark, a greenish tint, and lots of speckles. This new transfer is pretty terrific, with very accurate Technicolor-like hues and it’s very sharp (there are several outdoor sequences intentionally shot with heavy diffusion, and those scenes look the way they’re supposed to). I wish I liked the movie better – I do keep trying, really I do.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because, after all, today is a day to be reckoned with, or, to put it in a slightly different way – a day of reckoning with a side of pickles. I don’t know what that means, but I like the sound of it.

Today, I shall wait to hear from various people who are going in to help fight the good fight with the bureaucratic butt cheeks who are causing the problems. What I do will totally depend on the outcome of the good fight.

Meanwhile, I’m going to prepare the next Kritzerland release, which I’ll start taking preorders for in about two weeks. I also have a brief rehearsal for The Party Animals at noon to put in three new cast members for a little tour that’s happening. I haven’t met the newbies yet, so I’m looking forward to it.

Tomorrow, Mr. Adam Cates is supposed to come to LA to choreograph two numbers for the fundraiser, but that will now depend on what happens this morning. We shall see and we shall reckon, not necessarily in that order.

I’m quite happy that my evenings are free to relax, which I really need to do. I’ve also been catching up on a couple of CDs that arrived when I was gone. And I’ve been going through six large stacks of mail, too, slowly but surely and also surely but slowly.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, await the outcome of the good fight, rehearse, do errands, ship a couple of CD orders and attend to things that need attending. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, as we prepare for a day of reckoning.
