ONE HAND CLAPPING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what is the sound of one hand clapping? I have no idea why I just asked that question, it just came to me out of the blue and also out of the orange. I have often pondered what is the sound of one hand clapping and I feel I have the answer. The sound of one hand clapping is the sound of one hand clapping. Yes, there are those who will tell you that the sound of one hand clapping is silence, but I just clapped with one hand and I made a little tiny clapping sound – so much for the one hand clapping pundits and their specious philosophy. More interesting is, what is the sound of three hands clapping? The pundits don’t have an answer for THAT one, do they? Those darned pundits (stidnup, spelled backwards). Where was I? Oh, yes, the sound of one hand clapping. Speaking of one hand clapping, yesterday was yet another day of good stuff, frustrating stuff, and just plain stuff. I got up, did some errands right away, then had to wait for Mr. Toilet Man and His Snake. Whilst waiting, I had a work session on the musical I’m mentoring, which was brief, but fine. Then Mr. Toilet Man arrived, did his toilet thing, and now all is well in Toiletville. When he told me everything was fixed he heard the sound of one hand clapping, since my other hand had a Diet Coke in it. After that, I had to go pick up five huge boxes o’ stuff – props and costumes from The Brain, some of which have to be returned to LACC. And then, the rest o’ the day was spent in dealing with fundraiser stuff and I’m happy to say that we’ve added David Burnham to our merry troupe. He was wonderful in Light In The Piazza and we’re figuring out what song he’ll lend his beautiful voice to. I’m awaiting word on three others, which I hope to get today. If there’s a hainsies/kimlets group planning to attend, I can get a special group rate for you, so let me know as soon as you can. Our silent auction is really shaping up to be something special, too. If you want to bid on something but can’t be here, let me know your limit and I’ll make sure the bid gets placed. The signed musical quotes are really fun – the Sondheim is amazing, as it’s a full-sized piece of music paper with several bars from Not A Day Goes By in his hand – not only melody line, but accompaniment, too. It’s a fabulous piece. The Schwartz is from Popular, the Flaherty and Ahrens is from Ragtime. Still waiting on the John Kander, and I’ll also have a Menken one in addition to the printed music sheet of A Place Called Home, signed by Menken and Ahrens that I already have. Others are in the works. There will also be CD packages, DVD packages, vacation packages, fine dining packages, theater tickets and much more, as well as some one of a kind celebrity items. Finally, around seven, I refused to take any more calls and I went out to dine with cousins Alan and Dee Dee.

We supped at an Argentinian jernt called Lala. We got right in at seven, which was a surprise. The food was excellent – we all had the half-chicken in an orange and lemon glaze. I had some fries and a salad, both of which were yummilicious. We were there for two hours, and we had a splendidly splendid time catching up. Then I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night I started to watch a DVD I’ve had for ages – F.W. Murnau’s wonderful silent film, Sunrise. I’ll have much to say when I finish it this evening. It’s just a terrific bit of moviemaking and I’m really enjoying it – I’ve only seen it once before, in a park at the Telluride Film Festival (in its second year), projected on a sheet. It was magical then, and it’s magical now.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst we all applaud this section by clapping with one hand. No cheating now.

Today, I have a whole slew o’ things to do. In the morning, some more errands. Then a meeting with dear reader Cason. Then more telephonic calls to potential performers for our show, then eBlasts galore, and then attending to things that need attending.

Tomorrow I’ll be going to the Pantages to rehearse with one of the Wicked gals – can’t remember which. On Friday, I’ll definitely be rehearsing with Andy and Alet Taylor. There’s just so much to do it’s frightening, but we’ll get it done come hell or high or even low water.

Oh, dear, these here notes should be up and yet they are not up because I am sitting here, still typing after all these years. Well, I suppose I could wrap up these here notes and get them posted, because really, I’ve run out of things to say and when one has run out of things to say, it is a time for the sound of silence (or, as the pundits would have you believe, the sound of one hand clapping – those pundits are stupid – stupid, stupid, stupid).

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands, drive about in my motor car, meet, eat, and attend to things. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings whilst we put together our collective one hands and clap until we’re blue and/or orange in the face.
