TIME IS THE GREAT LEVELER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, time is the great leveler. Yes, Virginia, time is the great leveler and I, for one, have no clew as to what the HELL that means – but, I like the sound of it, don’t you? Time is the great leveler – is that a saying? If not, I shall copyright it immediately. I suppose it means that in the end those who do harm just because they can eventually get what’s coming to them. And I’m jiggy with that, oh, yes, I’m jiggy with that. Other than time is the great leveler, this week is flying by, like a gazelle playing Parchesi. What is Parchesi anyway. It sounds like some Eyetalian pasta dish, doesn’t it? Do you realize that if I had invented Parchesi I could write my own ticket? Have you ever written your own ticket? If so, what did you cite yourself for? Speeding? Making a left turn from the right turn lane? Speaking of Parchesi, yesterday was yet another day of ups and downs and also downs and ups. I like to think the ups outweighed the downs. For example, the ups weighed 184 pounds whilst the downs weighed 152 pounds. What I’m trying to say is that there were more ups than downs, but the downs were annoying nonetheless and, more importantly, lessthenone. For example, I got up. That was an up, obviously. I suppose that instead of getting up in the morning I might try getting down in the morning, just for a change of pace. I then did several errands that needed doing, some of which would be in the down category. I had many e-mails to deal with, and several telephonic calls, one of which would be in the up category – the addition of two wonderful gals to our fundraiser show – Miss Vicki Lewis and Miss Heather Lee. I’m hoping to hear about two more people tomorrow and you dear readers, of course, will be the first to know. After that, I lunched with Mr. Cason Murphy, and he has taken over the producer duties on the fundraiser, which will be very helpful to all. Lunch was really good, if you must know. We went to one of my favorite jernts, Vivian’s, and I had their truly yummilicious chicken salad sandwich with bacon and cheese. After that, I did a bunch of other stuff, and then I finally came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished watching a motion picture on DVD entitled Sunrise, directed by Mr. F.W. Murnau and starring Mr. George O’Brien and Miss Janet Gaynor. This film is amazing, there are no two ways about it. Yes, it’s melodramatic, yes, it’s a silent film, but boy does it have power and drama and some really funny and vivacious humor. And the technical end of it is mind-boggling considering the year in which it was made. There are shots that take the breath away, and some of the effects shot, mostly done in the camera, are really unbelievable. There is a commentary track with cameraman John Bailey, which I want to listen to to see how they did some of this stuff. I watched the film with its newly recorded original score by Timothy Block. The serious sections of the score are fine, but Mr. Block does the usual silent movie thing of Mickey Mousing the humor (especially egregious) and instead of playing against the melodramatic sequences he scores them melodramatically, which simply doesn’t work. But what a movie. The transfer seems fine, but the elements are in very rough shape, although I think we should be grateful that the film survives and is eminently watchable.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because, after all, time is the great leveler, and it has, in fact, leveled this section.

Well, faith and begorrah or Sodom and Gomorrah, today I have more things to do, including attending a little rehearsal with one of the Wicked gals down at the Pantages (not sure which one – I’ll find out when I’m there). After that, I have to write yet another eBlast for LACCTAA members. Then I have to keep on getting in touch with performers. I think if I can just book five more people, I’ll be very happy indeed.

Tomorrow, I’ll be rehearsing with Miss Alet Taylor and her ever-lovin’ Andy Taylor. Then we have our weekly production meeting, then it’s the weekend and boy am I ready for it. I’ll have plenty of work to do, but I’ll also have time to stop and smell the roses or the coffee or the ground chuck.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands, rehearse, do more errands, book more talent, and that sort of thing. Today’s topic of discussion: We’ve done it before, but I do love this topic – what are your all-time favorite board games, like Parchesi. Which do you love playing, which annoy you, which can you simply not get with? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and do remember, time is the great leveler.
