December 27, 2007:

THE WAYWARD WIND

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, how can it be Thursday already? Why that means that our Rockin’ New Year’s Eve bash is just a few days away. I gotta tell you. In other news, the wind is really kicking up its heels and has been all day. Huge branches from the palm trees out back are falling into the pool. I’m having to clean the pool drain three times a day because so many leaves are falling into the pool. First of all, if the fersluganah wind would wear flats or sandals instead of heels, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad. But noooo, the wind has to kick up its heels, and their stiletto heels to boot, so you all know what THAT means. The gardener came today, did his thing, and within five minutes of his leaving, it was as if he’d never been here – leaves everywhere. I tell you the wayward wind is a restless wind. I know most people call the wind Maria but I call the wind Anita or sometimes Riff. What the HELL am I talking about? I did manage to have quite a charming day yesterday, what with the visit of the darling daughter, her darling husband, and her darling friend, Skye. The whole thing was quite darling. They ate quite a bit of spaghetti, we had quite a bit of amusing conversation, and we exchanged gifts. Aside from the gift I always give my daughter, I also found an amazing thing in storage, and I gave her that, too – an original pastel drawing of her when she was about five. You must understand, she was the cutest child who ever lived and this pastel really captured her personality – she was delighted to get it. After they left, I did a couple of quick errands, ate a couple of tuna sandwiches and way too much cheesy potatoes, and did some major rearranging of CDs, moving a lot of my classical titles to the hall closet to make room for all the bossa nova and soundtracks that have come in recently. It’s now very neat in the CD closet and I can actually see everything. I’m going to try and clear one more shelf of what’s left of the classical stuff, which will help organize the instrumental and vocal sections. After that, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished watching the Mod Squad episodes. The last couple were pretty bad, actually, but had some fun location shots, including one almost right in front of the late, great Nickodell’s, and another right on Fairfax near Melrose. One episode was directed by Richard Rush, who would go on to make The Stunt Man. I’m looking forward to the rest of season one, and only wish that Paramount wouldn’t split up seasons like this. I then watched a motion picture I’d TIVOd entitled Frontier Marshall, the earlier version of what would become My Darling Clementine. Both films list the same writer and source material, and many of the scenes are very similar. However, Frontier Marshall, directed by the reliable Allan Dwan, is merely a programmer, starring Randolph Scott as Wyatt Earp and Cesar Romero as Doc Holliday (Halliday in this version). It’s short (seventy-one minutes) to the point and perfunctory, whereas John Ford takes the same material and turns it into sheer poetry and art. I’ll be watching Clementine over the weekend.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because the wayward wind is really busting its buttons and is quite distracting.

Have you ever had wayward wind? It’s quite bothersome, isn’t it? I really don’t care for the wayward wind and wish it would calm down and relax and smell the roses or the coffee or the Jovan Musk.

As predicted here many, many months ago, Virgin is closing its doors, at least in West Hollywood – its huge Sunset Blvd. store will be gone in January. I’m sure others will follow. That means that for music lovers, it’s basically Amoeba or nothing – certainly I would never buy a CD at Best Buy or Target or those types of places. When I think that only twenty years ago how many CD stores there were in LA and environs, both used and new, chains and mom-and-pop establishments, and how the Internet has killed the pleasure of store-hopping and the fun of discovery, well, it doesn’t make me happy, that much I can tell you.

Today, I have to ship out one little package, otherwise the day is mine all mine, save for a lunch at noon. I’ll do more CD organizing, and I’ll do some typing up of book notes, and then I’m sure I’ll watch a DVD or two.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, ship a package, have a lunch, and do whatever the HELL I feel like. Today’s topic of discussion: We continue with our ten best lists – what were your ten favorite plays and musicals you saw in 2007 (combined or separate categories), and what were your ten favorite theatrical performances of the year? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as the wayward wind continues to kick up its Barbara Stanwyck stiletto heels.
