‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I hate to tell you but ’tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la la la la la. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, ’tis the season to be jolly, for December has arrived and I’m already feeling the holiday spirit. Have you ever felt the holiday spirit? If so, how did the spirit feel about being felt? Have you ever felt a pool table surface? If so, how did the felt feel about being felt? Felt Felt – that’s the title of my new novel, a story of a man with an unnatural obsession for felt. What the HELL am I talking about? In any case, it is a time for egg nog or, at the very least, nog (for those who don’t like eggs), it is a time for mistletoe, it is a time for gaily-colored tinsel and ornaments, it is a time to simply get yourself in the holiday mode or, at the very least, the holiday a la mode. I, for one, have already danced the Hora and I’m feeling quite holiday-like. So, here’s hoping for a festively festive December and holiday season, and may Santa make all your wishes come true. I have begun the holiday season by organizing and cleaning. By the end of this weekend, everything will be clean as a whistle, with no piles of papers or magazines littered about. It’s quite a task as it’s about six months’ worth of junk – on tables, on chairs, everywhere you look. I’ve already tackled the book room and it is once again lovely-looking, and I’ve done the kitchen, too, as well as about half the den. The big mess I’m leaving till last, which is the dining room. Speaking of the dining room, yesterday was a nice end of November. For example, I got up. That was nice. I then had to do a few things, then toddled off to have breakfast with the lovelier than lovely Miss Linda Purl. We had a grand time and talked for two hours. We went to a place I’d never been to before, despite having driven by it about 40,000 times – Jinky’s CafĂ©, which, I gather, is a trendy breakfast jernt for out of work Hollywood types. When I arrived at eleven it was still jammed. The breakfast (eggs benedict) was excellent. I then had to do some errands, and then I came back home to get out of the pouring but wonderful rain. As soon as I came back, it stopped raining. Go figure. I did some work on the computer, and then began the arduous cleaning process, which took the rest of the day. For dinner, I went back to Jinky’s, but I’m afraid it’s a breakfast place and not a wonderful dinner place. Being the holiday season, I then had a craving for fruitcake, so I went to Gelson’s and got a very small fruitcake. I then came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled The Spoilers, starring Miss Marlene Dietrich, Randolph Scott, and John Wayne. The Spoilers is one of those movies I’ve never managed to see over the years, so it was nice to finally catch up with it. It’s a very entertaining film, but how could it not be with such a stellar company of players. It’s very fast-paced, well directed by Ray Enright, with a fantastic supporting performance by Richard Barthelmess, an actor whose work I wasn’t familiar with. The Spoilers has been filmed five times, the first version being way back in 1914. And a lovely touch of this version is having William Farnum in it – he played the John Wayne role back in 1914. The transfer is gorgeous and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. The movie is famous for its climactic fight scene and I must say it’s a corker.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst we all dream of sugar plum fairies.

I think a sugar plum fairy just walked by my house. The sugar plum fairy was walking a cute little poodle. If there are multiple poodles do we call them oodles of poodles? Just asking. Today, I shall be leaving early, for she of the Evil Eye will be here to clean. I have some errands to do, and Rhino Records is doing this weird thing of having pop-up stores – they’re opening a store near the Farmer’s Market that will only be open for about two weeks – then it will pop up somewhere else at some other time.

Tonight, I’ll be supping with the Jones’s, which I’m very much looking forward to. Tomorrow, I’m not sure what I’m doing. Starting Monday, I have meetings all week long – lots to do, and then, of course, my book signing a week from today.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, leave early, do errands, continue my cleaning of various and sundried rooms, and then I must sup with the Jones’s. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite holiday season treats – those things you dearly love to eat during the Christmas season. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we remember ’tis the season to be jolly and we dream of sugar plum fairies with oodles poodles.
