A PIECE OF MAHLER’S

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we’re almost halfway through January. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, we are almost halfway through January, which is flying by, like a gazelle listening to a piece of Mahler’s. And one for Mahler. I’lllllllll drink to that. Does anyone – still – wear – a – hat? What am I, Elaine Stritch all of a sudden? I gotta tell you. When I first heard the lyric “a piece of Mahler’s” I thought they were talking about a sticky bun or a candy bar or something. Only later, did I discover the world of Mahler and his mighty musical music, which is now, of course, amongst my favorite mighty musical music. I have many pieces of Mahler and they’re all fat-free and no calories. My favorite piece of Mahler’s mighty musical music is his Sixth Symphony (the “Tragic”), which is filled with the most amazing music, one great tune after another. I have many performances of this symphony and I love most of them for very different reasons. I’m most partial to George Szell’s electrifying performance (it actually fits on one CD, unlike most other versions), and for lyricism and beauty I very much like Solti and John Barbirolli. Why am I going on about a piece of Mahler’s? Has Mahler ever gone on about a piece of mine? No. Speaking of a piece of Mahler’s (and who wasn’t), yesterday was a very long day during which I did many things. I got up early, and did the long jog right away. It’s been very summer-like here in the City Of Studio, so it was very pleasant out and a beautiful day. After I got home, I rewrote some of what I’d written the day before, then wrote another three pages, then had to go back and rewrite about a third of an earlier page because I realized I’d repeated something that I’d used and I needed something fresh – I came up with it, did the rewrite and I think it’s fine. Muse Margaret liked the idea of it, and I’ll give her that page to read when I give her the next batch o’ stuff. I then had some errands to do, then someone brought over some CDs for me, then I picked up three count them three packages from the mail place, then I toddled off to a lunch meeting at In ‘n’ Out Burger with the head of the LACC Theatre Academy. We spoke of many things, of cabbages and kings, and I ate a cheeseburger and fries (my first fries in over eight weeks) – I felt I deserved the fries, and therefore had them sans guilt. I came home and did another page, listened to a CD, and then had to be on my way to a meeting with the event committee for First Star, the charity event I helped with last year. They’d like me to provide this year’s entertainment again, and I have a couple of ideas, so we’ll see which I can actually pull off. It was a ninety minute meeting, after which I stopped at Gelson’s and picked up two small containers containing small foodstuffs for my evening snack (can’t really call it a meal). After I ate the food all up, whilst watching the first ten minutes of a 70s TV movie called Terror On the 40th Floor, a Towering Inferno rip-off, I then returned to Ye Olde Laptop, where I wrote about four more pages for a total of eight for the day, which was a good day’s writing. And that was my day and evening.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’ve got another long day ahead of me tomorrow and I believe the accompaniment for the long day will be a piece of Mahler’s. I’llllllll drink to that.

Today, it is my intention to do the long jog. It is my intention to write at least five pages. It is my intention to have an early lunch meeting and then a work session with our very own Miss Lauren Rubin, who will be helping me with the demo recording of the Nudie Musical score, which we hope to do in a week or two. She’ll be singing the Cindy Williams part. The good news is that after that’s done, other than writing and perhaps finishing the Nudie Musical entering of the fixes and changes, the rest of the day is mine all mine and I shall savor it like fine Diet Coke. If I take it easy at my early lunch meeting, then I may do dinner rather than a snack. We shall see. And for dessert, perhaps a piece of Mahler’s.

Tomorrow, I have an eleven o’clock meeting with Mr. Ted Detweiller, to discuss a little recording project. I’m looking forward to it, actually. Thursday I have meetings, and then an informal read-through of the musical I’ll be directing a staged reading of, and Friday I have at least one meeting and maybe a dinner – not sure about the latter. We shall see.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora or the foxtrot, for today is the birthday of dear reader TPunk. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader TPunk, even though she’s been most errant and truant. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER TPUNK, EVEN THOUGH SHE’S BEEN MOST ERRANT AND TRUANT!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, write, have a lunch meeting, have a work session, write more, and do some errands and whatnot. Today’s topic of discussion: Where have you had the best french fries and the best onion rings you’ve ever had. I’m a huge fan of both foods and relish a discussion of same. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we all have a piece of Mahler’s. I’llllllll drink to that.
