SO FAR, SO GOOD

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this week is flying by, like a gazelle with mad cow disease. I wonder if the cows have ever had mad gazelle disease? In any case, it’s already Thursday and the end of the first full week of 2009. I feel it’s already been a productive beginning of the year. I’ve been writing at least six pages a day and am having a lot of fun doing so. And the big garage project is something I’m so happy I’ve done. We’re a little more than halfway through, and all the Kritzerland stuff is already organized and in its proper place, and what a pleasure that is. I’ve gone through many boxes, found many interesting things, including a couple of items I’d been desperately looking for. I’ve thrown out about ten boxes-worth of crap, too. And I’m sure I’ll find a few other things and throw out even more. I’ve set up meetings about several different projects, and am about to set our first three LACCTAA events for the year, which I’m excited about. So, so far, so good and I hope it all continues like this – we all need a great, productive, and prosperous year. Speaking of a great, productive, and prosperous year, yesterday was a whirlwind day. I got up and answered some e-mails, and then Handyman Doug arrived and began his handiwork, moving a huge number of boxes out of the garage. While he was doing that initial stuff, I did the long jog. As I said above, I went through almost all of them, so we could figure out which could go in the back piles and which needed to stay where I could easily get to them. He then moved those boxes back to the shelf in the garage, and then he organized all the Kritzerland stuff. In the meantime, I did manage to write over three pages, and then I had a few errands to do, and I had a foot-long Subway turkey sandwich for lunch. He left about four-forty and is coming back today to finish. I then delivered the last of the Kritzerland CDs, then stopped at Gelson’s and got a small thing of Chinese chicken salad and a small thing of potato salad. I then came home and sat on my couch like so much fish and ate same.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled The Naked Edge, the final film of Mr. Gary Cooper, one of my favorite screen actors. I saw this film the week it opened and I must say that at 12 years of age, I rather liked it. It was a Hitchcock wannabe, but a well-done one, I thought, at least at that age I thought it. It had a good murder right at the top of the film, and the end of the film was quite suspenseful. The film was a total box-office bomb and received mostly tepid reviews. I’ve seen it a few times over the years, and while I see its faults now, I still rather enjoy it. Part of that is because I really like Cooper, and the rest of the cast is also splendidly splendid, including Deborah Kerr, Peter Cushing, Eric Portman, Diane Cilento, and the divoon Hermione Gingold. The William Alwyn score is a little bombastic, but I like it anyway. The black-and-white photography of Erwin Hillier is wonderful. The transfer on this region 2 DVD from Spain is excellent – unfortunately letterboxed to 1.66:1 but not enhanced for widescreen TVs.

I then wrote another three pages and called it a night. It hates when I call it a night, but I do it just because it amuses me even though it doesn’t amuse it. What the HELL am I talking about?

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because so far, so good and let’s keep it that way by sending all our excellent vibes and xylophones to everyone.

Today, I’ll definitely do the long jog, and we’ll definitely finish the garage project. I’ll also find time to write at least four or five pages, eat something amusing, and I’m quite sure I’ll watch a DVD or three. I’ll also finish act two of the very long script, and I’ll make some notes so I actually have something to say when we meet about it on Sunday. It should be a nice, full day, after which I’m having a meeting with Mr. Sean McDermott about his solo show.

Tomorrow, I’m getting together with the composer and lyricist of the very long script, to hear a few new songs. Other than that, the day is mine all mine. Saturday, I’m having dinner with the Jones’s and giving muse Margaret all the pages written thus far for her approval.

Sunday I have a meeting with the writers of the long script, and then a dinner meeting with Miss Alet Taylor about her solo show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, finish the garage project, write, eat, and have a meeting. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite films of Gary Cooper and Deborah Kerr? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we take heart in the fact that so far, so good.
