MY FUNNY VALENTINE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry for she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon. And all too soon I shall be visiting the Hollywood Collector’s Show, which will be jam-packed with stellar stars from film and television. I shall see friends, I shall see dealers, and I shall be going with our very own Mr. Grant Geissman. That’s really the long and the short of it, isn’t it? Or is the short and the long of it? So, I could stop right here and no one would be the worse for wear or even the worse for where. But I shan’t stop because that would be unseemly. Speaking of unseemly, yesterday was a day that came and went and also went and came. I got up early, thought about doing the long jog, but before I could do anything about it, it began to rain and continued raining on and off for the entire day. It was also really chilly out. So, mostly I stayed inside the home environment, where it was warm and cozy, not necessarily in that order. I did some more Nudie Musical casting (we have quite a good group going, with about four more people to go), and I also wrote another verse for a reprise – I felt it was lacking said verse when I looked at the way I structured the reprise, which weaves in and out of a montage. I picked up a few packages, did more work on various and sundried things, and ate a Subway sandwich and a small pastry from Gelson’s. By the time all that was done it was already five-forty and I toddled off to rehearse with Mr. Sean McDermott.

I spent three count them three hours. We started at the top of the show (working with a CD of the music). As we got to each new number, he read me the ideas for the patter, and I finessed them, rewrote them, added some jokes, and got them to be succinct – we did that for every number. He wrote it all down and will now send me the new versions for further refinement, if needed. There are some tempos that need fixing, and I decided to make one change to an arrangement, which we’ll implement when we’re next with the MD. I also felt this very long three-song R&H medley (not really a medley, since each song is complete) was way too long and came way too early in the show – we’ve pretty much decided to cut it for this interim version of the show – we’ll revisit it later, to see if we can come up with some kind of arrangement that will make it have some musical sense. Sean, of course, sounds great on the songs, and if he gets the revised patter down well, he’ll be very charming and funny. I did only a tiny bit of staging, as he’s in a very small space. And we decided what numbers will be hand-held, which will use the mic stand, and which will use the stool. All in all, it was a long but good session. We reconvene on Sunday, and I’m hoping our MD will be with us for an hour. Then Sean works on his own until the day of the show – I won’t be there for this one (it’s in Palm Springs and occurs the same evening as the Nudie Musical reading), but he’ll be videotaping it so we can have a post-mortem and decide what stuff will stay for the real act we’ll be assembling over the next couple of months.

I stopped at Gelson’s on the way home and got a tiny bit of their seafood salad and some grapes, which I had for my evening snack. And then I listened to some CDs and that was my day and evening.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because we have some celebrating to do.

Today, as noted in the notes, I will be attending the Hollywood Collector’s Show in the Bank of Bur. I will, of course, have a full report and maybe even some actual photographic photographs.

And now, a public service announcement: Lovers, this is your day. Yes, Virginia, this is a day for lovers to spread the love because today is a little day I like to call Valentine’s Day. Hearts in bloom, love in bloom, every damn thing in bloom for the world of lovers and lovely love. I should hope there will be plenty of hugging and kissing and fondling, especially fondling. I should hope that plenty of candy hearts will be exchanged and eaten. One simply can’t eat enough candy hearts. I should hope that many choruses of My Funny Valentine will be sung. So, let’s have a love connection here at haineshisway.com – even if you don’t have a lover, we at haineshisway.com are lovers and we shall all meet and romp in flower-filled fields, where dreamers dream and lovers love, and Cupid draws taut his bow and let’s loose with love arrows filled with Love Potion Number Nine. In other words, Happy Valentine’s Day!

Tomorrow, I have another three-hour rehearsal with Sean, and then I’ll try to attend the second day of the Hollywood Collector’s Show, just to say hey to our very own Miss Linda Purl.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog (weather permitting), attend the Hollywood Collector’s Show, do some work on the LACCTAA newsletter, and then eat something amusing that is filled with love. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your all-time favorite disco songs – I was always quite partial to the classic disco songs. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we all sing My Funny Valentine in A#.
