TONY TIME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s Tony Time here at haineshisway.com. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it is Tony Time here at haineshisway.com. No, we’re not celebration Tony Martin or Tony Newley or Tony Tanner or Tony Bennett or those kinds of Tonys, no, we’re celebrating the Tony Awards. That’s right, it’s our annual Tony Awards Do and this is the place to be for the most irreverent coverage of the Tony Awards. We expect fashion faux pas, we expect dirt and dish, not necessarily in that order, but we do have to be careful of spoilers for those not on the East Coast. In fact, I have no idea when the show actually starts, so I’ll have to find out. So, be there or be round for a really fun evening filled with merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. How can it already be after midnight? How can it already be June? How can this year be half over? These are the questions that are roaming around in the windmills of my mind. I thought yesterday was going to be a day of relaxation, but that was not to be. I got up early, did the long jog, then had to do some unexpected errands and whatnot. I spent some time dealing with our Nudie Musical recasting and I’m happy to say we are now fully cast. Not only that, our second performance is almost sold out, and our first performance is getting there, as well, so that’s good. I ate an early but yummilicious luncheon, and then did more errands and whatnot. By the time all that was done, it was late afternoon and then I received the link to the final testing place of Kritzerland. A couple of us went through it all, and it all seemed just perfect – until we placed an order. The order went through fine, but it did not get forwarded to the e-mail address where my paypal invoices generated via Kritzerland go. Last night, we placed an order and it DID go to the correct address, so this was a little baffling. It ended up going to the e-mail address I use for payments made via the paypal site directly to that address. I can’t have the Kritzerland invoices going there because it will get very confusing. There’s something screwy and since paypal has been doing all sorts of weird updates to their site that has caused a few buggy problems, we’re hoping it’s that. We can’t really find out till Monday morning, when their tech team is back in the office. We did talk to paypal, but all they could tell us was that it looked like it should be forwarding to the address we’ve chosen. Other than that, I’d say we’re good to go.

Last night, I finished watching Broken Arrow, not the western, but the John Woo film starring Mr. John Travolta and Mr. Christian Slater. Since I’m a fan of Mr. Woo’s rather operatic style of action filmmaking, I enjoyed Broken Arrow. No, it’s not a very good movie, script-wise, but Woo keeps it moving along with some splendidly splendid sequences. Travolta is trying way too hard and this seems like a bad dress rehearsal for what he’d ultimately do very well in Face/Off. Samantha Mathis is okay, and Slater is better than okay. The transfer (or encoding) on the Blu-Ray is not that great – it’s a little soft and a little smeary-looking. It was another early Fox title and they do use a different encoding now that is clearly better. There are many Leone-like moments in the film, made more so by Hans Zimmer’s occasional Morricone-like music.

After that, I began watching Australia, a film of Baz Luhrmann. I’m kind of enjoying it so far – am almost an hour in, but it’s a three-hour film so I had to stop and then listen to the new Kritzerland master for our new show release. This one was difficult for the mastering guy, but he did his usual excellent job with an occasionally spotty tape source. I’ll give you dear readers the usual jump on ordering it, perhaps by the end of this week. It will be the first new title on the new version of the Kritzerland website.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because, after all, it will soon be Tony Time, and I don’t mean Tony Soprano.

Today, I do have to make a couple of telephonic calls, and then I’m just listening to music and watching motion pictures right up until the Tony Awards and our Tony Do, which I’m really looking forward to. I’m sure it will not be quite as attended as last year’s do due to a lot of errant and truant people around these here parts.

Tomorrow and Tuesday are our music rehearsals and I am really excited about it and really excited to hear voices other than mine own singing the songs. And then Wednesday we begin staging rehearsals, with Adam doing three numbers and me doing all the book stuff and whatever musical staging I need to do. It’s daunting and scary to do it all so quickly, but I know that with this company will have a lot of fun.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, make telephonic calls, eat something fun, and then attend our Tony Do. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we all prepare for Tony Time. My one Tony prediction is that my lovely pal Alice Ripley will be taking home the award. I told her she would be and she will be.
