CALIFORNIA, HERE I COME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry, for I have a really early flight home to LA and must be up very early to be on my way to the Newark airport. So, with no digressions, here’s the skinny and also the fat. I had another long and exhausting day, beginning with my usual trip to the gym where I did my usual brisk four-mile run and one-mile walk on the treadmill. Of the four days I’ve done this, this was by far the hardest, but I got through it. It was, I must say, a rather glorious day, not too hot – in fact, it was nice and cool with a lovely breeze. I then hurried and took a shower, then joined my friend Gene Castle for some fruit at Joe Allen. Gene’s a wonderful sort and has so many wonderful Broadway stories – he began as a child performer in shows like Flower Drum Song and Gypsy (the original productions), went on to dance on Hullabaloo, was in George M and lots of other shows. He’s become a choreographer and sometime director and is very talented and good at both jobs. We had a wonderful chat and caught each other up on what’s been going on. I then had to go to rehearsal with Crista Moore, and we finished staging what we hadn’t gotten to, and then Alex put the entire show on tape for her, so she can now rehearse everything we set. We all feel good about what we’ve come out of this rehearsal period with.

After rehearsal, I hurried to the Brooklyn Diner, where I was joined by Adam Cates. We had a lovelier than lovely dinner and chat and gabbed about all sorts of interesting things, including next February’s NY staged reading of Nudie Musical, which I believe is now a reality. About an hour into dinner, we were joined by Miss Merrill Grant and our very own Rodzinski – we moved to a bigger table and had our dessert there. I love the food at the Brooklyn Diner and it was as good as ever. Instead of my beloved coconut cake, I tried a dessert new to me that Rodzinski was having – chocolate pudding pie, and boy was it great. Of course, I also had a bite of coconut cake, since that’s what Adam and Merrill split. We all had a lot of fun, and then said our goodbyes. Rodzinski walked me back to the hotel.

I then finished packing, so in the morning all I have to do is pack my toothbrush and computer and I’ll be ready to go. I’m ready to come home – four-and-a-half days are just right for me. I must say, this was one of the most fun NY trips I’ve ever had – I got to see lots of friends, ate good food, did good work, and set in motion a lot of stuff for upcoming events. All in all, a terrific time was had by the likes of me.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button because I must shortly lay my head on the pillow and try to get as much sleep as I can.

Today, I shall go to the Newark airport and then be on my way back to LA. Please send lots of excellent vibes and xylophones for a safe, on-time, and happy flight – send them strong and send them often.

When I get home, I’ll unpack, print out a huge number of e-mails that must be printed, ship out some packages, and at some point, begin addressing boxes for our next release, which ships Tuesday morning. I also have to finish the liner notes for the new release and get that packaging set and approved and to the printers by Tuesday. And I had brilliant news late yesterday that I just got the rights to one of the most in-demand cast albums never released on CD – it’s taken me seven months to get it, but it’s mine all mine. Very exciting news.

Saturday, I have to have a meeting with the co-author of the long musical – not thrilled about it, frankly, and I’m sure he’ll have a lot to say, as is his wont – but I will also have a lot to say, things that must be said if our staged reading is to proceed smoothly.

Sunday is mine all mine, save for addressing packages and getting postage on them. Hopefully, I’ll have a helper.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, fly home to my beloved LA (and don’t forget the excellent vibes and xylophones aplenty for a safe, on-time, and comfortable flight), do a few things, and then relax, relax, relax (that is three relaxes). Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – when I get home, I have a ton of CDs to listen to, and I’ll watch the last six episodes of Lost, Season Five. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I get some sleep and then sing California, Here I Come.
