PENNY LOAFERS AND EGG CREAMS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am quite happy that it’s the weekend. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am quite happy it’s the weekend. I want to be a lazy loafer this weekend. Not a lazy saddle show, mind you, no, I want to be a lazy loafer, and a penny loafer at that. I, of course, owned a pair of penny loafers when I was a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth, and I dearly loved them and looking at my shiny penny in each shoe. They were plain black and since there was a penny in each, I suppose you could have called them two cents plain. What exactly was two cents plain – seltzer for two cents? I can’t remember. I do remember that when I lived in Flatbush there was what they called a candy store where they served egg creams, and I remember those quite fondly. Don’t you just love how I can go from penny loafers to egg creams in the same breath? When I would get my egg creams I’d also get little red licorice rolls, which I also loved. In fact, I was rather fond of Flatbush in certain ways. Right as you’d get off the subway at the Newkirk station, there was a wonderful pizza jernt called Vinnie’s Pizza. Flatbush Avenue was only about five blocks from where we lived on East 29th Street – at least I think that’s where we lived. I’d walk up to Flatbush Avenue and walk for a mile just to walk by the many beautiful movie theaters, and to visit several really nice used bookstores. I gather that the old neighborhood is not quite the same these days. The fact is, I haven’t been back there since I moved back to LA in early 1970. Do they serve egg creams in New York or Brooklyn anymore? Maybe I’ll try to find one on my upcoming trip. Penny Loafers and Egg Creams – that’s the title of my next novel. I had a nice little day yesterday. I got up early, did a couple of early errands, printed out some more orders (How To Murder Your Wife, The Apartment, and Illya Darling are all getting the sold out sign today or tomorrow), and did the long jog. I then spent many hours trying to make sense of an upcoming Kritzerland release. I put everything into the film cue order (the way the takes are slated), which took quite a while, then I listened to it and it does seem like it will make a fun CD, although there will be a lot of editing to do, combining short tracks and making them into longer tracks. The sound should be swell because it’s the original three-track scoring session masters. I think I can squeeze out a thirty-five to thirty-eight minute CD, and then I’ll add some alternates and bonus things that will bring it up to about forty-five minutes. So, I’m pretty sure I’ll commit to it on Monday. But our next release is really fun, and that one should be fairly easy to put together – it’s going to be the last of the two-fers (there could potentially be one more after it, but that would really be it) – two scores on one CD. We’ll announce this one in a couple of weeks, just before I go to New York in search of an egg cream and to work with Miss Crista Moore on her act. Let’s be sure to plan some sort of get-together whilst I am there. After doing all that work, I then did some more errands and whatnot, and then had a bad craving, which I satisfied, but probably at the cost of gaining a pound or two. I went to Stanley’s and had their yummilicious chicken pasta, which is pasta, chicken, broccoli, onions, and cashew nuts, all in a heavy cream sauce. Boy was it good. I have stayed away from this dish for over a year, and it was as good as it always is. After that, I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I finished viewing Lost, Season Three and watched the first episode of Lost, Season Four. For anyone who watched Alias, the big season finale was a teeny bit like déjà vu, but it worked well and there were many excellent moments. I do like that this show isn’t afraid to kill off some of its leading characters. And I really like the guy who plays Hurley. I will be interested to see how and where they take the show in season four, given its new direction.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I now have to go do some research to see if they still have penny loafers and egg creams, not necessarily in that order.

Today I shall not do much of anything, which is exactly what I need. I will do the long jog, I will eat very lightly, I will watch a few episodes of Lost, Season Four, and then I’ll begin to catch up on other Blu-Rays and DVDs that need my attention, including the Blu-Ray of a Moody Blues concert – I used to love the Moody Blues, so I’m sure the concert will be a lot of fun. I also have Changeling on Blu-Ray – I didn’t love the film when I watched the DVD, but I think I’ll give it another viewing, and I’ve also got Never Say Never Again, which I don’t think I’ve seen since it came out, maybe the only Bond I’ve never seen more than once. And I have quite a few CDs to catch up on, listening-wise.

Tomorrow should be more of the same, and then begins a very busy little week, with lots of meetings and whatnot, and a return visit to the dentist. Oh, joy.

Oh, let’s put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s dance the Hora or the Monkey, because today is the birthday of our very own der Brucer. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own der Brucer, who has been with us since the very beginning of the old One From Column A days. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN DER BRUCER, WHO HAS BEEN WITH US SINCE THE VERY BEGINNING OF THE OLD ONE FROM COLUMN A DAYS!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, hopefully pick up any one of a number of overdue packages, and I must relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What were your favorite childhood snacks, candies, and soda fountain drinks? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I find me some penny loafers and a chocolate egg cream posthaste.
