THE BROKEN RECORD REDUX REDUX

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I hate to be a broken record, I hate to be a broken record, I hate to be a broken record, but today was yet another long, exhausting but fun day. I went to bed way too late and got up way too early and, conversely, I got up way too early and went to bed way too late. I wasn’t sure if I was going to go to the gym, but in the end I did. Once there, I did four brisk miles and then a brisk one-mile walk on the treadmill, for a total of five miles. My legs were sore, but I got through it and now, of course, my legs are even more sore or sore more. After that, I came home and had to deal with a flurry of over-dramatic e-mails, then I made some telephonic calls, ordered more boxes, decided what the gift that comes with the new novel will be, talked to the company that will do it, and then it was time to toddle off to rehearsal. Our first two hours were just Crista and I talking through things and doing specific staging for several of the bigger numbers – I always enjoy the staging part, and she likes to have everything planned out, so that was a good deal of fun. Then Alex arrived and we continued doing what we were doing, and then talked through some other things, then played through some stuff and the four hours went by very quickly indeed.

I then came back to the hotel, answered yet more e-mails, made the plan with Adam Cates for tonight’s dinner, and then toddled off to sup with Miss Merrill Grant. I really hadn’t seen Merrill since we did the Brain at NYMF, so it was fun catching up on stuff. I got the skinny and also the fat on some very interesting theatrical brouhahas that are going on, and she told me about the club act she’d done at the Metropolitan Room, and I caught her up on what I’ve been doing. We did the opposite of the Walter Willison dinner – she had the pulled pork sandwich and I had the roasted free-range chicken, which was amazingly succulent and wonderful. Then Mr. Kevin Spirtas arrived (Merrill played his daughter in the LACC Brain) and that was a whole new batch o’ fun. We all shared some cobbler and dish was dished and it was just a lovelier than lovely evening. Merrill is still cute as a button.

When we were leaving, so was Paul Schaeffer from the David Letterman Show. It was drizzling as I walked to the hotel, but it was light and I’m hoping that any further drizzle and/or rain will not be in evidence until after I’m on my way back to LA Friday morning.

I had yet more e-mails waiting for me when I arrived in my room. One of them was from someone who works for Cadbury who’d somehow found something I’d written about Swedish Fish on this here site and now wants to do an interview with me about Swedish what is it Fish. Isn’t that funny? I also had an e-mail from the fellow who’d directing the Brain that George auditioned for, asking some questions about the harmonies, and also about how best to use the ensemble. I’m going to suggest we do a phoner – much easier than doing it via e-mail.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I really must try to get a good night’s sleep tonight, I really must try to get a good night’s sleep tonight, I really must try to get a good night’s sleep tonight – what am I, a broken record all of a sudden?

Today, I may or may not do the gym – it will totally depend on how sore my legs are when I arise. I’m going to try and meet my pal Gene Castle for a drink before rehearsal. This, of course, will be our final rehearsal for this trip and we’ll do as much as we can do to get it so Crista can rehearse on her own. We’ve done some really good work and she has the makings of a really good show. I’ll probably come back at some point when she’s got it all down, to hone it.

After rehearsal, I’ll be heading over to the Brooklyn Diner to meet Adam Cates for dinner. I may just have to have the coconut cake. I think we’ll be joined by some other people toward the end of the meal. After that, I shall head back to the hotel, pack, and get to bed as early as possible, as my transportation arrives at five in the morning. I’ll then go to the Newark airport and be on my way back to LA.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, maybe go to the gym, maybe see my friend Gene, rehearse, sup with Adam (and whoever comes later), and then get as much beauty sleep as possible. Today’s topic of discussion: I can’t think of one, so can someone please come up with something for today – be brilliant! Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, whilst I hit the road to dreamland – again with the broken record.
