THE GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I got a pretty good night’s sleep and am starting to feel less tired. Hopefully, I’ll get another good night’s sleep tonight and be feeling my oats by tomorrow. Of course, I just had a late-night visit from a neighbor friend, who brought along Mr. Jerry Hoffman, who is famous for having played a certain infamous character in the film of The First Nudie Musical. So we had a nice chat, and now I am late in writing the notes and, conversely, the notes are late in writing me. I had quite a relaxing day yesterday, at least it was relaxing after my morning meeting, which, as morning meetings are wont to do, took place in the morning. The meeting went like I wanted it to, and then I came back home where I did some various and sundried chores, after which I went to Mystery and Imagination Books in Glendale to bring them an advance copy of my new novel – we set a tentative signing date for September, which I’ll confirm with them this week, as soon as I check my September schedule. After that, I went to the mail place where there was some mail but no packages, and then I came home, ate a sandwich, and then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, I watched episode twelve of Lost, Season Five, which was pretty good. I then watched five episodes of Adam 12, which were not quite as good as disc one – but still, there were some wonderful location shots of West Hollywood (still hoping they get back to the Valley), and one episode about the shooting of a policeman, was very powerful. I then watched a motion picture on DVD, one of those Warner Archive DVD-Rs, entitled Mike’s Murder. I think I probably saw it back when it was released. It has some good things in it, but overall it just doesn’t work very well. Debra Winger is excellent, and Mark Keyloun is good (I directed him in Prime Suspect some years later), and Paul Wingfield is always terrific, but it just meanders along and doesn’t add up to very much. The film was actually shot right after An Officer And A Gentleman, which had made Winger a hot commodity, but it tested poorly and was shelved for a couple of years. The original idea of the film’s writer/director, James Bridges, was for the story to be told backwards, like Memento would do years later. But, the studio got cold feet and had it re-edited and put in chronological order. They also removed most of Joe Jackson’s original score, replacing it with an excellent score by John Barry, one of the few things about the film that works perfectly. It finally came out in 1984 after Terms Of Endearment had earned Winger an Oscar nomination. None of it mattered and the film was not a success. The transfer is nothing to write home about, although, just to be contrary, I did write home about it, but home hasn’t responded yet.

After that, I revised, polished, and fixed my liner notes for the new Kritzerland release, which I’ll announce exclusively for you dear readers on Monday or Tuesday.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because it’s late and I must try and get another good night’s sleep.

Today, I shall try to do some sort of jog, and then Mr. Cason Murphy will be coming by to help address and postage packages. That will probably take a couple of hours and them maybe we’ll get a bite to eat. After that, it’s my intention to finish season five of Lost, after which, I’ll go back to more Adam 12 episodes.

Tomorrow I have a lot of stuff to attend to, and attend to it I shall. I have meetings to set, meals to set, errands and whatnot aplenty and it shall be a very busy week indeed.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do some sort of jog, address and postage packages, eat something fun, and then do a lot of viewing. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I try for another good night’s sleep.
