THE TRIP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here I am, high in the sky, sitting on an aeroplane writing part one of these here notes on location. We’ve already had our scrambled eggs, ham, sausage patty, and something resembling a potato of some sort. The movie is already over (it must have been VERY short) – something called The Great Buck Howard. My internal alarm clock, which is pretty reliable, went off about three-thirty in the morning and my iPhone alarm went off at four-fifteen. I had a backup plan wherein someone was going to call me at four-fifteen, just in case, but said someone’s alarm didn’t go off, hence they did not call. I showered, packed the last of the toiletries, and waited for my transportation. The ride to the airport was quick and effortless. As we drove up to Continental’s terminal we passed the Delta terminal and at five-twenty in the morning I have never seen a line or crowd of people like that in my life – pure unadulterated insanity. Thankfully, Continental had no such line or even anything approaching such a line. Getting through security was the fastest it’s been in years. The plane boarded right on time and we took off right on time. I haven’t run into any annoying people yet, which is also unusual. I was trying to remember, but wasn’t this the year that wireless Internet was supposed to happen for aeroplanes? Certainly it hasn’t happened on THIS aeroplane, but wouldn’t that be fun if it happened? I could post from the friendly skies all the livelong flight. I’m a little tired, but I’m sure I’ll get my second wind when I arrive in New York, New York. And that is all the news that’s fit to print and I shall resume these here notes from the comfort of my hotel room.

And here I am in my hotel room, finishing up the notes. It was a very pleasant and quick flight with no hiccups, save for some heavy turbulence as we were making our initial descent (ID, in Internet lingo). I was off the plane quickly and in a cab quickly and into the city quickly. The front desk person was very nice, and while the room is small, it’s fine – it has a bed, a desk, free wireless, a widescreen TV and a fair-sized bathroom. Not a lot of walking room, but I don’t intend to be in the room all that much. The only not as advertised thing for the hotel is that the advertised gym is, in fact, not in the hotel, it’s a couple of blocks from here and costs $15 a day. I’ll try it out and see if it works for me – it totally depends on how busy it is – the hotel gyms are rarely busy during the hours I use them – we’ll see about this other jernt.

Once settled, I made a little trip to the nearby Duane Reade, took a walk and checked out the gym, and stopped at a wonderful store I’d never seen before called Midtown Comics – really fun. Then I toddled over to Joe Allen where I supped with Miss Crista Moore, and discussed the act we’ll be assembling during my stay. I gave her some thoughts and ideas and we had a splendidly splendid time. Since I’d had a little food on the plane, I just had a shrimp cocktail and a chicken sandwich, with a few potato chips. The restaurant was pretty empty, but I think that’s probably usual for a Sunday night during August. There were a few drizzles when I was walking there, but they were over by the time I jogged back to the hotel.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because even though it’s not that late, I am quite tired and quite ready for bed.

Today, I shall try to be at the gym by nine-thirty – if it’s too busy, I’ll just jog for a while on the streets. Rehearsal isn’t until two-thirty and will run four hours. I think we’ll spend most of it playing through new songs, trying out some medleys I have in mind, and then I will look at what Crista’s been doing with the act for a while. I have an idea of the structure now, so it’s a matter of honing what we’re keeping, and planning the new stuff and figuring out where things go.

After rehearsal, I shall toddle over to FJL’s home environment for our get-together. I’m looking forward to seeing whoever shows up.

The next three days’ schedules are the same during the day (I may try to do a couple of lunches), and Tuesday night I’m seeing Skip’s new musical, Wednesday night I’m supping with Merrill Grant, and Thursday I’ll be seeing Adam Cates – I’ve kept the evening open for any impromptu get-togethers, but it will be an early evening as I have to be at the airport in Newark bright and early and also early and bright.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do some sort of exercise, have a rehearsal, and then attend a get-together. Today’s topic of discussion: I know there might be a few who might not be able to answer, but what was the first time you were ever in New York? What was the occasion, what did you do, did you like it, hate it, have fun? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we continue what we hope will be a nothing but fun trip.
