THE WITH IT AND HAPPENING ME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am finally going digital, cable-wise. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I am finally going HD for my TV viewing. Why is this? Well, yesterday, I turned on the TV for the first time in a couple of weeks and the TIVO box which controls all the channels and such was not working. It is dead, morte, finished, kaput. I ascertained this by calling DirecTV who talked me through some steps and then they confirmed that the unit was no more. So, we talked through various and sundried options, and since it’s now only ten dollars more a month to have the HD package, I said yes – hence, on Thursday in the morning hours the DirecTV Men will arrive and do what need be done. And then I can finally view hi-def programming and I do believe I’ll be getting a couple of those hi-def movie channels, and I gather that the digital recording unit makes HD copies of what you want recorded. I think this shall be ever so much fun. I shall now be with it and happening and people will look on me with admiration and awe because I am awe courant. I do hope that installing the unit is just a matter of unplugging the old stuff and plugging in the new, but then I don’t know if they use HDMI cables, in which case it will have to go into one of the HDMI ports, which means they will have to get in back of the equipment, which ain’t easy, but that’s their problem – as long as they don’t unplug anything it will be fine. I also gather they put up some other kind of dish, but I really don’t know how it all works. I only know that I’ve had my TIVO and dish for more than six years. In any case, it will be fun to view certain things in hi-def.

I had quite an okay day yesterday. I got up early and did the long jog, then had my lunch meeting at Genghis Cohen, where, as always, the food was extremely yummilicious. I then came back home and typed up four pages of notes for the long musical, which I then sent to the authors. One never knows how they’ll react to these sorts of detailed notes, but I was pleasantly surprised to get an e-mail from one of the book writers, saying he loved the notes and planned on implementing all of them. I was very happy about it, especially as they’ve finally agreed to remove a couple of jokes that just don’t work, jokes I’ve asked them to remove from every draft. We’re getting close to actually having to cast this thing, so that will be quite a lot of work, as it’s a very big show or, as Ed Sullivan used to say, a very big shew or, as Mr. Florsheim used to say, a very big shoe. After that, I went to the bank, I went to my mail place, and did a few other errands and whatnot, and by that time the day was basically at an end. Some more orders were packaged up, too, and then I sat on my couch like so much fish and watched a couple of episodes of The Mod Squad, Season Two, Volume Two. I must say that even by the halfway point of season two, the show was already on the road to being terrible. Oh, I still enjoy my Pete, Linc, and Julie, but the scripts are getting really bad and after watching four seasons of Lost, The Mod Squad looks rather quaint, to put it kindly. After that, I didn’t feel like watching anything else, so I just puttered around the home environment thinking of this and that and also that and this, listening to music, and having a couple of telephonic conversations.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must crawl into the bed, watch a little of Planet Earth, and then hit the road to dreamland.

Today, I have a light day. Just a few things to get done, and I have to start writing the liner notes for our new release – I won’t be able to complete them, because I have never seen one of the films, so I have a DVD winging its way to me shortly. Hopefully it will be here by Monday, and I’ll have everything else finished and I can just drop in the section on that film and its music once I’ve watched the film in question.

Tomorrow, of course, I go to Dr. Chew bright and early to get my permanent crown. I think he’s also going to prep the other tooth that’s getting a crown – not because there’s anything wrong with the tooth, but because there’s this now-large gap between two of my upper rear teeth and he doesn’t want the gap there. I’m praying he doesn’t have to give me a shot, but if he’s got to drill the tooth down, then I know he will. I’m shuddering just thinking about it.

Thursday, DirecTV will come, and I also have to set up several meetings that day. And then Friday I have a work session with the composer/lyricist of the long musical. The weekend is unknown at this time.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, I must start writing liner notes, I must hopefully pick up a package or three, and I must do a couple of errands and whatnot. Today’s topic of discussion: How fast do you jump on the new electronic trends? For example, when did you get your first record player and what kind was it? When did you get your first CD player? Your first VCR? Your first laserdisc player (presuming you got one)? Your first DVD player? Your first mp3 player or iPod? Your first car phone? Your first cell phone? And your first Blu-Ray player and widescreen TV? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, because frankly I am so with it and happening that it’s positively frightening.
