THREE HAIL MARYS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, yesterday I did a very stupid thing. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, yesterday, I, BK, did a stupid thing. When I got home from lunch and errands and whatnot I noticed that my parking lights were on. How that happened I have no idea, but I opened the door and turned the switch to turn them off. About forty-five minutes later there was a knock on my door and my neighbor informed me my headlights were on. Say what? I went outside and looked and sure enough my headlights were on. I guess I turned the knob the wrong way. I pressed the remote to unlock the car. Nothing happened. I knew instantly that because I’d done a stupid thing that a mere forty-five minutes later the battery was completely kaput. I hate when a battery is completely kaput, don’t you? I went inside and called the Auto Club. Happily, they arrived a mere ten minutes later, gave the battery some juice and Ye Olde Motor Car was up and running. I went and drove around for about twenty minutes to make sure it would be fully charged. I hate when I do a very stupid thing, so I will say three Hail Marys and eat a churro so that I do not do such a stupid thing again. Of course, I’ve never said one Hail Mary in all my born days, although I have eaten exactly one churro, so that counts for something. In the Jewish religion I guess you say three Hail Shlomos or Hail Hymies. In any case, I’m not doing any more very stupid things, at least I will try not to. Other than that silly bit of business, the day was just what I wanted it to be. I got up at nine and had a telephonic conversation with the lady producer who is interested in the Hofstetter books. I then had a telephonic conversation with the co-author of the long musical – it was a short conversation. I then had to answer quite a few e-mails, including an amusing one from the UK, from someone who thought they were writing me a letter reeking with inference of potential wrongdoings – it did reek, but then I illuminated reality for him and his tune changed immediately (signed contracts do wonders to change people’s tunes) and he became very nice and we had a pleasant e-mail volley. He understands the lay of the land and we decided to chat in a few months. After that, it was time to toddle off to an early lunch at Musso and Frank. When I arrived there was only one couple in the entire restaurant, but by the time I left it was pretty full. My lunch partner and I had fun catching up, there were a lot of laughs, some ears were probably burning, and the food was yummilicious, as always. Of course I had the combination Louis, with 1000 Island Dressing and cocktail sauce. I didn’t go nutty on the dressing and used the cocktail sauce for a lot of it. I just love that combo Louis.

After lunch, I came directly back to the San Fernando Valley, where I picked up exactly one package (not one I was expecting, actually), then I did a couple of errands and whatnot. I came home and wrote the blurbs for our two new releases, and then got everything to the web designer so he could make those pages for the Kritzerland site. I discussed the potential days to announce the release with one of my online dealers, and we both had the same idea, so the announcement is all set to go. I then said three Hail Marys, one Hail Elizabeth, and five Hail Marvins. Then I decided it was the Christmas season and realized I haven’t gotten my Christmas cards to send out. I really must attend to that this very day. I sang some Christmas carols and some Christmas marys (I was tired of the Hails). I then ate a frozen Cherry Ripe, which made me very happy. Then I packaged up some more orders and then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Mission: Impossible, the first in the series of motion pictures, this from 1996. I saw it when it first came out and remembered being dazzled by the hi-techness of it all, with those incredible computers that could do anything, and all those hi-tech adventures. Well, watching it is 2009 the film is positively quaint-looking. It’s an okay movie – nothing great, but the pace is good and De Palma is clearly having a good time. But all that hi-tech computer stuff – it’s hilarious to watch it now. Floppy discs and drives, Usenet newsgroups, the really hi-tech thing called the Internet – it was most amusing to see just how far we’ve come since then. The cast is okay, the Danny Elfman score is nice and loud, but the only music that really makes things come alive is, of course, the Mission Impossible theme by Lalo Schifrin. The sequels are a lot more action-filled and nutty, but there’s something retro and fun about the first one now, so I had a good time. I went and read some “reviews” to see what the “reviewers” thought about the transfer, and these same people who bitch and moan about the silliest things, transfer-wise, liked this transfer very much. The only problem is that it’s really not a stellar transfer. It’s not sharp enough and it has some weirdnesses in darker scenes – I’m guessing it wouldn’t look much better than an upscaled DVD, but who knows? Sound was good, though, and the transfer is certainly not a disaster.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I think it’s time to say three Hail Harrys and one Hail Arvin.

Today, I must do some errands and whatnot and I really would like to do a jog of any length, so I will definitely try to do so. Otherwise, it’s a light day. I have a dinner at seven – going to Barone’s, one of my favorite Eyetalian jernts.

Tomorrow should be a relaxing day, and the Sunday or Monday my darling daughter will come for her Christmas visit. Monday night I’ll probably be seeing our very own Miss Juliana A. Hansen, who has been away in far off London, England for six months. We’ll have some dinner, and perhaps watch a motion picture. It will be fun to hear her tales of the United Kingdom.

Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, let’s all dance the Hora and the Texas two-step, because today we are celebrating not one but two haineshisway.com birthdays. The first haineshisway.com birthday is our very own dear reader PennyO. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own Jewish Thighs dear reader PennyO. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN JEWISH THIGHS DEAR READER PENNYO!!! Our second birthday belongs to dear reader Dan the Man. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Dan the Man. On the count of three or the earl of four: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DAN THE MAN!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, do errands and whatnot, deal with Christmas cards, have a light day, and then, most likely, have a heavy dinner. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, the soundtrack to Bullitt, and the new Kritzerland masters. Blu-Ray, not sure what will be next. DVD, Howard Hawks’ Hatari. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we say three Hail Marys, six Hail Debbies, and two Hail Lulus – and don’t forget the churro.
