MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, since I did nothing yesterday I suppose that means I have nothing to say about doing nothing other than I did nothing, which is in and of itself nothing. In other words, these here notes will be filled to be brim (mirb, spelled backwards) with nothingness. Actually, I did do a few things yesterday such as deliver a big box o’ CDs, eat a nice lunch, and deal with a couple of issues with our new master, with which I was not entirely satisfied. So, we tweaked that and all was well. But other than those few things I did exactly what I wished to do – nothing. Nothing is what I did. Mostly I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday, whilst I was doing nothing, I watched two count them two motion pictures on Blu and Ray. The first motion picture was entitled The Time Traveler’s Wife. This was a bad motion picture. This picture was rather gooey and sappy but also silly and inane, and, of course, it looks and sounds like every other one of these gooey and sappy movies. The screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin, the only credited screenwriter on Ghost, is trying to be like Ghost only there is one considerable thing missing and that is Jerry Zucker, who, while not having a writing credit on Ghost, most certainly is responsible for the humor of that film. This film is living proof of that. The film just meanders along, little of it makes sense, not even within the universe they’re trying to have the audience accept. I’m actually a sucker for these sorts of time-travel romantic things (think Somewhere In Time) but this is just a stinkeroo on every level, from its script to its direction to its two non-star lead performances. The Blu-Ray, unlike the movie, is stellar, with love image and sound. I then watched the second motion picture, which was entitled Fame. I was looking forward to revisiting this film but after ten minutes I came to the realization that I’d actually never seen it. I’d only seen two or three scenes. So, now I’ve seen Fame. Some of the film works quite well, but it’s way too much a soap opera about really uninteresting characters behaving stupidly. I wish they’d concentrated on the actual school more and what it takes to succeed, and the work and discipline, but that’s not what the film is about – it’s about angst and drama (there is shockingly little joy or humor in the film) and it’s all very clichéd. It succeeds mostly in a couple of musical numbers – the title song is fun and iconic and Irene Cara’s Out Here On My Own is a wonderful sequence. The real fun for me was seeing my beloved New York in 1980, when it was still New York. It’s amazing to see two or three movie theaters on every block of Broadway, and it’s equally amazing that there is not one movie theater left on Broadway in Times Square. The Blu-Ray transfer is superb and knowing the film stock of the time for release prints, this probably looks better than it did in theaters. Sound is a little anemic.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Aren’t I supposed to be writing about nothing? I feel I haven’t written nearly enough about nothing, not that I’m trying to make much ado about nothing.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because this day is going to be very, very busy and I need to get up quite early.

This morning I shall be seeing a potential place for the staged reading of the long musical. Directly after that, we have a two-hour casting session and then I must hie myself to the Hills of Woodland to have a visit with my very own actual brother. Cousin Dee Dee and Alan will be there, as well. I’m looking forward to the visit. After the visit, I’ll probably grab a sandwich, then hopefully pick up some mail and packages, and then finish my new liner notes and get that off to the designer so we can complete the package for our new release. Then I must write the blurb and prepare to announce.

Tomorrow and the rest of the week I’ll begin slowly going through the manuscript of the new book. Cason comes tomorrow to address packages, and I’m hoping he’ll have time to go to my local storage facility to help me find three memorabilia boxes – if we find them, I’ll bring those all home with me so I can choose photographs for the book. Other than that, I have several meetings to attend and a couple of meals.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, see a place, have a casting session, have a visit, eat, and prep our new release. Today’s topic of discussion: Take any word of your choice, spell it backwards, and then when you have your new word, make a definition for it. That way, we will have some brand new catchphrases for haineshisway.com. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hope and trust that I made much ado about nothing.
