March 1, 2010:

A COCKEYED OPTIMIST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is March. I ask you, where else on all the Internet can you find such information? Nowhere, that’s where. Yes, Virginia, it is March, and I, for one, am hoping we all have a most wonderfully wonderful month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. Call me a cockeyed optimist, but I’m stuck like a dope with a thing called hope and I can’t get it out of my heart – not this heart. What am I, Nellie Forbush all of a sudden? Certainly I think I’ve been called Nellie once or twice, but that’s another story. In any case, it is March and let us have high hopes and be cockeyed optimists for a lovelier than lovely month. February ended with a rather pleasantly pleasant day. I slept very late, which I needed to do. I then got up, dealt with a plethora of dramatic e-mails, and then toddled off to a film composer’s home environment, where I listened to the sequencing of an upcoming Kritzerland project. It’s going to be quite a good CD, and I had only a couple of little comments. That took a little over two hours, and then I hurried over to an art gallery opening, showcasing local artists. A friend of mine had two paintings in the show, both of which were getting nice notices, although neither garnered a prize. There were some interesting paintings and I met a few of the artists. After that, I toddled over to Little Toni’s for either a late lunch or an early dinner. It was three-fifteen, but I found that they don’t open their doors until four o’clock, so I just went over to Miceli’s and supped there. It was good but not great, but it hit the spot and I was quite full. I then came home and finished the liner notes for what will hopefully be our next release. After that, I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Hard Rain, another of those inane 90s action pictures, this one a complete critical and box-office bomb starring Christian Slater and Morgan Freeman. Naturally there are nothing but ten-star ratings on the imdb. It is to laugh. In any case, I’m always up for enjoying an inane 90s action picture, but I’m afraid this one was even more inane than I could stand. In fact, it was a VERY long ninety minutes of nothing but pure unadulterated inanity that taxed my sanity. I will say that there was a lot of hard rain in the film, a big, oversized flood (this is an action film AND a disaster film AND a robbery film), a nice performance from Minnie Driver, and some of the stupidest writing I’ve ever heard on the screen. The transfer seemed excellent, and so did the sound, not that any of that mattered given the awfulness of the film.

After that, I saw the new, fixed cover of the new book and Grant did a great job of leg removal and fixing the unwieldy drop shadow, so it’s now perfectly perfect and I am happily happy. I listened to the new Kritzerland master, which is terrific – this score has never sounded better. And then I just relaxed and nosed around the Internet.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because we are cockeyed optimists and therefore believe that the next section will be chock full of both nuts and other strangers.

Today, I have a two-hour work session with the composer and lyricist of the long musical. I then have some errands and whatnot to do, some packages and mail to send, some packages to address, and other various and sundried things to attend to. I will hopefully pick up a package or three, as well. I’ll also find something amusing to eat, and I’m planning on starting to run again at some point this week. I also have to make an appointment with Teddy as my hair is most unkempt.

Tomorrow I have a long work session with the co-author of the long musical. It was the right day to do it, since I’m stuck here waiting for the alarm company to install new parts – once that’s done, I’ll end the work session, which I’m hoping won’t be more than three hours. Then I’m hoping that if they want me to actually use the alarm system, that they give me whatever codes I need.

Wednesday I have a lunch meeting and then the week gets lighter for me. I’m hoping my two proofers will be finished by the end of the week – that would be very helpful, actually. I would like to start designing the book no later than two to three weeks from now.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a work session, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages, and begin addressing packages. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite mindless action films from 1990 to now? Maybe I’ve just missed the good ones, so give me your choices, please. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we welcome March with open arms and high hopes for a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity and all things bright and beautiful – sure, call me a cockeyed optimist.
