March 24, 2010:

THE FINISH LINE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was another day of reading/proofing and doing and going and I am once again exhausted and bleary-eyed, not necessarily in that order. However, the good news is, I believe we are finally either extremely close to the finishing line or have crossed it – I need to do one more simple go-through of the finished book, not reading carefully, but just making sure that on all the pages where we did fixes that nothing else got screwy in the process. That said, we were extremely careful when doing them and double-checked each step of the way. Plus, when I got home I went through it quickly and everything looked swell. I was up by nine yesterday morning and began proofing/reading at nine-thirty, taking only one brief fifteen-minute break to go pick up a couple of packages. I finished the proofing/reading at around four-thirty, then answered a few e-mails and then it was time to go over to Grant’s to finish our work. We entered all the fixes, corrected the few name misspellings, and then Grant began work on laying out the final eight pages of photos. He’s really good at this stuff, and as soon as he had the photos done I’d caption them. That all took from five-thirty to about nine-fifteen, and then to celebrate, we went over to Hamburger Hamlet and had nachos and I had the California Market Salad. It was the first food I’d eaten all day. Grant also came up with a terrific solution for the blurb issue, and we’re going with it. On the way home, I had a wonderful telephonic call from our very own Pogue and his ever-lovin’ Julieanne. I finally sat down, did my quick perusal of the book, and then had to start writing these here notes. After over six hours of reading off the computer screen, my eyes are so tired and sore, and my head has been on the verge of a headache all day. Even though I asked our creative team to not call today, I think the phone rang about four times – I didn’t take the calls, as promised. So, we could conceivably get the book to the publishers by the end of this weekend, which would make me VERY happy. We have to find out two technical answers, which I’ll e-mail the publisher about tomorrow.

The most amusing mistakes (not) I found on this final reading/proofing were names I’d misspelled. I don’t know what I was thinking – I should have checked every single one of them. Several required doing major global replacements. And just before we were finishing our work, I realized I’d spelled yet another first name incorrectly – thank goodness I caught it because if I hadn’t it would have remained uncorrected. We did a global and fixed all those, too. So, God-willing, we are hopefully finished.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because the finish line is either about to be crossed or has been crossed and I now need a wonderful night’s sleep.

Today won’t be quite the walk in the park that I was hoping for. I do have one short meeting in the morning with our stage manager, then I have to highlight the stage direction that will be read at the reading. After I’ve done that, then I shall be free to relax, do some errands and whatnot, and hopefully watch one of the four new Blu and Rays that arrived yesterday. In the later part of the evening, Cason and I will be going over next week’s rehearsal schedule and once approved he will send that out to everyone.

Tomorrow will be mine all mine. Nothing planned and I’m keeping it that way and making sure that everyone knows it is a full day and evening of ME time. Friday I begin paper blocking our show and will hopefully have all that work done by Sunday, so that Monday I can relax and gird my loins for the very busy week that follows.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a short meeting, highlight a script, and then finally relax, eat a light meal, and watch a Blu and Ray and then do a final rehearsal schedule. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we hope and pray we have crossed the finish line, book-wise.
