I FEEL A SONG COMING ON

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I had a most relaxing day for the most part and that was most what I needed. I still need a few more of those, but I will get them in the next few days. I tell you, that was just so informative, wasn’t it? Maybe if I wrote it as a song it would be better?

I had a most relaxing
Not too taxing
Day
I still need more, though
Three or four, though
And I’ll get them – come what may

I feel a song coming on, don’t you? That was just so musical – now that is a peppy way to start the notes. In any case, I had a mostly relaxing day and I am all the better for it, although it is not necessarily all the better for me. That darn it. I got up a little earlier than I would have liked, and then went to a meeting with the creative team of the long musical, where they very nicely presented me with an ownership position in the show in perpetuity, no matter what happens. I told everyone we all needed to take a month off and not think about the show at all. I will be gathering notes from people who saw it, putting them in categories, and then we’ll ultimately discuss that. But I know what needs to be done about the obvious things that aren’t working, and in order for this show to ever have a chance those changes will need to be made. After the meeting, I drove back to the San Fernando Valley, mailed some mail and a package, picked up some mail and no package, sent an overnight package to my mastering engineer and then went to Hugo’s, where I had not pasta papa but pasta mama, which is basically the same dish but without the bacon and turkey sausage. It seemed like a very small portion, actually, and that was fine by me. I also had a small Caesar salad and some chocolate mousse. After that, I came home, answered e-mails, did some work on the computer, had a few telephonic conversations, and then finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I decided to watch a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Cocoon. I’d only seen it once before when it originally came out, and while I thought it was okay I really didn’t understand its huge popularity. Watching it now, the film has mostly aged well, and is now especially worth watching for the cast – the wonderful Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy, Jack Gilford, Gwen Verdon, Maureen Stapleton, Don Ameche, Wilford Brimley – they are all so wonderful in this picture and since all but one of them has passed on, it’s especially poignant. Brian Dennehy is great, as always, and Tahnee Welch, while not much of an actress, is as beautiful as her mom. The only sour note for me was and is Steve Guttenberg, who is simply, for me, one of the worst screen presences in the history of film. Ron Howard’s direction is of the meat-and-potatoes variety, but he gets the job done and he definitely is wonderful with actors. The score by James Horner is one of his best. Now, I’m sure the usual wags on the various home video sites will say the transfer is a little soft or a little this or a little that. In fact, it’s an exemplary transfer of a film that didn’t look that good in the first place. It replicates that look perfectly.

Prior to watching that, I’d watched last week and this week’s episodes of Lost. The former was not to my liking at all, and the latter was much better – I know some here loved every minute of it, but it didn’t quite achieve that for me, although it was the closest this season has come to matching some of the really good episodes of past seasons. Prior to that, I’d finished watching one of those Warner Archive DVDs entitled Never Too Late. I saw it when it came out and really didn’t care for it that much, and time has not made it any better – in fact, it’s fairly hard to take, save for the wonderful Paul Ford, who I could watch in anything. The transfer, for a Warner Archive title, is pretty nice.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I think I’ll just post these here notes early and then hopefully get a good night’s sleep. In the meantime, I feel a song coming on.

Today, I shall be shipping out quite a few overseas packages and some single orders, too. I’m hoping I can be done with that by noon and then the rest of the day and evening will be mine all mine.

Tomorrow, I have a lunch meeting, and then I’m attending a play by Sam Bobrick at the Falcon Theater – I’ll be going with our very own Mr. Barry Pearl and his ever-lovin’ Cindy, and their friends (and mine), the Petries.

Saturday, I guess I’ll mosey on over to the Bank of Bur and attend Monsterpalooza. I have no idea what it is or what to expect, but I’ll pay my respects to our very own Mr. Bert I. Gordon, who will be a guest.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, maybe do a jog, ship packages, eat, do errands and whatnot, and then get some more ME time. Today’s topic of discussion: Tell us about the latest motion pictures that you’ve seen – I literally know nothing about anything that’s playing. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I feel a song coming on.

I’m gonna post the notes
The notes I’m gonna post
And then I get my beauty sleep
Which is what I need the most.
