THAT MARCOVICCI MAGIC

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the Andrea Marcovicci event was stellar. It was very well attended, Andrea was her usual delightful self, and responded to the questions honestly, humorously, and with great insight, and so did her longtime musical director, Shelly Markham. She sang two songs, the audience loved her, and she had many wonderful tips for them during the Q&A portion of the show. Of course, Cason was there with his ever-lovin’ girlfriend, who is a delight – down-to-earth, pretty, and very bright. After the event, we went to Palermo – also in attendance there was Adryan Russ and Shelly. I had some nice food but despite it not being humungous portions I got really full, like I’m about to burst full. I didn’t get nearly enough sleep – I had a lot of stuff rolling around the windmills of my mind and didn’t get to sleep until almost two, and then, for whatever reasons, I was up at six-thirty and could not fall back asleep. So, I caught up on answering e-mails and whatnot, and then I got ready for event, did a little banking, and was on my way.

After the event and our impromptu meal, I came home, answered more e-mails, and then sat on my couch like so much fish. I turned on a motion picture on DVD and promptly fell asleep for about forty minutes, which was great. I then watched about twenty minutes of the movie, which I’m enjoying – it’s called Mail Order Bride, a bottom of the bill programmer from the 1960s, starring Buddy Ebsen and Keir Dullea. It’s nothing special, but it’s got some charm and I just really enjoy Mr. Ebsen. I’ll finish it at some point today. And then it was time to see a show.

Last night I saw a show adapted from Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore, this adaptation being a spoof of Star Trek. It was their first public performance so they’re shaking out the kinks and getting used to things, so I’m not going to comment much. The whole thing moved along, my helper was very good in it, and I think audiences will enjoy it. I then came home, began these here notes, and then the plan was to meet the helper at Jerry’s Deli after her notes session, which I will do shortly.

Back to Andrea for a minute. We got some great stories about her working with Woody Allen on The Front, and heard about some of her flop musicals she’s done – Ambassador, Chaplin (with Anthony Newley) – in fact, she’s never been in a hit musical. We talked about how she came to do her original cabaret shows at the Gardenia in the midnight slot, we talked about how she feeds off audience energy and needs that to inform what she does – all fascinating. What she does in her shows is very particular and wouldn’t work for everyone, but she’s a master at it and was very articulate. A treat for everyone in attendance and a real example of that Marcovicci Magic.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because soon I must away to Jerry’s Deli for some dessert, I should think, after which I shall return and post these here notes for all to see and for see to all.

Today, I shall do some work in the morning, and then my brother is coming over with his son and we’ll be eating and hanging out. Then the brother will sleep over and leave in the morning. So, that will be interesting, and, I’m sure, amusing on some level.

Tomorrow, we have a phoner at noon for one hour, and then I’ve got a ton of stuff I have to do. Of course, I’ll be up at six in the morning to announce our latest title. I was going to post it here last night, but I didn’t have time to write the blurb, so I’ll post at midnight tonight.

Then, I’m working with David Wechter the rest of the week, for at least two to four hours a day. I have to regiment my time very carefully this week, because I have a lot of other stuff to attend to. And then it’s the book signing next Saturday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do some work, spend time with brother and his son, do some work, and get to bed early. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I go eat dessert and then hit the road to dreamland.
