THE MEAT OF THINGS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, thank heavens the bout of food poisoning was fairly short-lived. I woke up feeling much better with only a little bit of queasiness. Of course, then I had three solid hours of shipping CDs to do and that made me feel very tired and sort of weak, but once we were done I came home and relaxed a little. Then about two-thirty I decided to mosey on over to Jerry’s Deli to try and get some food in me – after all, I hadn’t eaten in about forty hours. After discussing my predicament with my very nice waitress, we decided on poached eggs, white toast, and white rice, along with a bottle of ginger ale. It was a brilliant choice and everything went down fine and I felt so much better, energy-wise. I then came back home, where I thought I’d be having the rest of the day off, but that wasn’t the case, as I had to begin prepping our next two releases. I had to send notes on one of them, and do an editing road map on the other, and that took quite a bit of time. After that, I took a quick trip to Gelson’s to get some more white rice, for I was really still famished. Then I had a couple of telephonic calls, answered many e-mails, after which I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Did I just dive into these here notes or what? I just dove right in without so much as a preamble or an opening. I just got to the heart of the matter, I just got to the meat of things. For example, I didn’t even say that I got up yesterday. I did. I didn’t say that when I went to wake up Ye Olde Computer that it wouldn’t wake up, after which I noticed that the modem and Time Capsule lights were also off. Some quick detective work found that for whatever reason the plug to the power strip had come slightly loose. I tightened it and voila, everything was working within minutes. I forgot to mention that we shipped nearly 900 CDs – lots to the post office, and a big amount to the UPS Store. So, all that happened to. But I just wanted to get to the meat of things and tell all you dear readers that I was feeling better.

Last night, I watched a motion picture in high definitions on the DVR entitled The Group. Somehow I’d never seen this film before, so it was very nice to finally catch up with it. First of all, what a cast – Candice Bergman, Jessica Walter, Kathleen Widdoes, Elizabeth Hartman, Shirley Knight, Joan Hackett, Joanna Pettet, Hal Holbrook, James Broderick, and on and on. And they all speak with real voices – no whispering – and you can understand every single word they speak. Note to today’s crop of bad actors – stop whispering – it stinks. Sidney Lumet’s direction is terrific and the film looks fantastic. It’s an oddly constructed film and it just sort of jumps (literally) from scene to scene in odd and jarring ways. Occasionally there are school songs sung by a female choir to bridge these scenes, and sometimes there is typing on screen from one of the gals doing updates. But it’s only sporadic and the film just seems very herky-jerky to me. I think one way around it without changing a foot of film or any re-editing, would have been an actual musical score – I felt the lack of one really hurt the film – it’s 150 minutes long, and music really would have helped. Still, I enjoyed it very much – you can’t really miss with that cast. And the transfer, especially color-wise, is gloriously glorious.

After the movie, I did some more work on the computer, and took a shower, and then I just got to the meat of things and dove right into writing these here notes. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I feel that I want to get to the meat of things in the next section.

Today, I have to continue prepping the two releases. Then I have to watch the actual film from one of them so I can then write those liner notes and title the tracks. That will take up most of the day. I know there’ll be some packages arriving, too, so I’m looking forward to those. I’ll probably stick with eating light and safe. And tonight, I shall watch Lost and a motion picture, not necessarily in that order.

Tomorrow, helper comes and we have to address a LOT of packages and put postage on them, then on Thursday we ship out Earth vs. the Spider. This is very unusual, to ship out two titles in one week, but ship we will. Friday, I have a ninety-minute meeting for the long musical. I may be seeing a show on Friday night. Also, I have to write the interview questions for Andrea Marcovicci’s event on Saturday. I do hope some of our West Coast zanies can come on by.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, prep two releases, watch a film, write liner notes and title tracks, and eat something light, as well as pick up packages. Today’s topic of discussion: The Group introduced an incredible number of just-starting-out actors – what is your favorite film that introduced an incredible ensemble cast? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we all get to the meat of things, except eating-wise.
