THE TONYS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had us a splendidly splendid Tony Awards partay here at haineshisway.com, even though I was completely distracted trying to deal with many other things that had to be dealt with. The one thing I can say is that the Tony show, for me, sunk to an all-time low, part of which has to do with the musicals this season. The numbers were mind-numbingly bad, I thought, whether revival shows or new shows. The opening number gave me a headache, and having Green Day perform in their section was so misleading – will tourists now think they’re going to see Green Day in American Idiot? The lighting alone in that show would keep me blocks from the theater. Having two cast members from Glee perform completely irrelevant numbers? Pander much? I don’t know if it was coincidence, but movie stars winning all the awards in categories in which they were nominated? And the way the Tonys are presented and directed is so sleazy – this is not the MTV Awards. This should be a classy event – it used to be a classy event, but now it’s not classy, it’s crassy. Maybe my being distracted during the show was a good thing.

Otherwise, yesterday was completely weird, mostly because this situation with the helper has reached the boiling point, at least my boiling point. I have been nothing but wonderful to this person – supportive and kind. She simply refuses to communicate and it is so baffling to me and it is now completely in annoying territory and that is not a territory you want to go to with me. I wrote her yesterday morning that if I didn’t hear from her that I’d simply see her at the theater where she’s doing her show and she could bring the box of invoices there. I didn’t hear from her, and I went to the theater. She didn’t arrive until fifteen minutes before curtain, and word was sent to me via the stage manager that she didn’t have the box with her. When I got to my car she’d texted me that she’d call after the show, and that she wasn’t working at all today and we’d work everything out. Of course, she didn’t call after the show, nor did she send a message saying anything at all. Can someone explain this kind of blatantly disrespectful and amateur behavior to me, because I’m just not getting it. So, I have no idea if I’ll hear from her today or not – and I’m really at a loss as to how to proceed. At this point I don’t even care if I ever see this person again, but she has a box of Kritzerland invoices, without which I cannot tally sales for the period ending in two weeks. That is a serious impediment to my ability to conduct my business – but if she won’t call, won’t bring the box back, what exactly do I do? I can wait until Friday and go back to the theater, but I’m afraid she’ll tell them something that’s not true. If anyone has any suggestions, please send them to me because I’m just about at the end of my rope with this and as some here know, if I’m pushed to the end of my rope I can get really nasty. I truly hope it doesn’t come to that, because I don’t like going to that place. But I also don’t like to be treated cavalierly by someone who should really know better. I guess we’ll see what happens today.

So, that was on my mind for much of the day. I delivered a big box o’ CDs to my local dealer, I ate some crap from Gelson’s, and then, just before the Tony’s began, I got the master for CD 1, which I listened to and thought sounded great. Then CD 2 started uploading, but very slowly. After I heard our version of the overture, I asked the engineer to make a few more adjustments, which he did, and so that’s the one we’ll be using. But I had to run back and forth between the Tonys and the computer and haineshisway.com and iTunes. It was quite maddening.

And that was my day, and that was my night and I am so ready for sleep, especially as I have to be up at six to announce our new title. Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get my beauty sleep.

Today, I shall have to have a telephonic conversation and we need all your excellent vibes and xylophones that said conversation ends up being positive. It’s going to be a tricky one to navigate but I shall do my best. Other than that, I have to write, do some errands and whatnot, and hopefully print out a LOT of orders.

I’m not sure how the rest of the week is playing out, other than the usual meals and meetings and writing and coming and going and doing. I’ll be much more fun as soon as I get this helper thing over and done with and get my box o’ invoices back. I’m on the hunt for a new helper and have had a couple of responses already to a note I posted on Facebook.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a telephonic conversation, I must hopefully get my box of invoices back, write, eat, and whatever else needs doing. Today’s topic of discussion: Since La Cage Aux Folles won best revival, what are your favorite Jerry Herman songs? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland.
