I’VE NEVER BEEN IN LOVE BEFORE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, did you ever have a song stuck in your head? I have had a song stuck in my head for about four weeks now and I can’t get it out of there no matter how hard I try. And what is this stuck song? Well, I’ll tell you what this stuck song is because why should I keep such information from dear readers such as yourselves? The stuck song is Frank Loesser’s divoon I’ve Never Been in Love Before. I have no idea how it came to be stuck in my head but one day I was playing with my iPhone and I began to sing it. Now I sing it at least twice a day – a cappella, with piano accompaniment, I just let loose with I’ve Never Been in Love Before. It’s a wonderful tune and the lyric is just perfection. So, there you have it it – I, BK, am an I’ve Never Been in Love Before-aholic. I am on the road to recovery, I’m sure of it. Meanwhile, another topic has been of great interest to me – soap or body wash? I have always used Caress soap – it smells nice, it’s not sticky, and I always feel very clean. Then someone gave me some Arbonne body wash, and I’ve used that now for two days and I must say I don’t care for it much. I’ve been told it’s much better for the skin, but I have to say I prefer Caress and, like Ella Peterson, I’m going back. Speaking of going back, yesterday was yet another perfectly pleasant day – in fact, it was more than pleasant, it was quite lovely. I got up at eight to find over 100 orders for our re-pressing of the Promises remix CD – that made me very happy, and by day’s end we were up to close to 200 orders, which basically covers the costs of doing it, which is all I cared about.

I’ve never been in love before
Now all at once it’s you
It’s you forevermore…

There I go again. Where was I? Oh, yes, my day. The new helper arrived promptly at ten (love that), and had done all the work she’d needed to do with the invoices. We then finished doing some publishing forms for quite a few CDs – she was so on top of it and we got it done quickly and got it sent off to where it needed to go. She then did some organizing. This gal is tops.

For this is wine
That’s all too strange and strong
I’m full of foolish song
And out my song must pour

Stop the madness. Where was I? Oh, yes, my day. After she left, I then went directly to the Glen of Dale to have the new motor car’s first servicing. I used to get the old motor car serviced at the Van Nuys Infinity dealership, but they were not good, rude, and I really didn’t like them. The Glendale dealership is a whole different story – calm, excellent service, quick (in and out in one hour), inexpensive, and fixed the two little things I had to report. Whilst waiting, I went to a little nearby cafĂ©, where I had a bacon and cheese omelet that was out of this world – it came with a teeny-tiny hashed brown square, and some white toast. After that, I went to the mail place and picked up two count them two packages, and a couple of envelopes but not the piece of mail I was hoping would be there – but, it was a holiday week so it’s probably still in the system – hopefully it will arrive today or Monday. After that, I did some work on the computer, answered e-mails, printed more orders, packaged up a couple of orders, and then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Nightfall, one of my favorite 1950s film noirs. It’s directed by the great Jacques Tourneur, and features Aldo Ray, Brian Keith, and Anne Bancroft. It’s got a terrific plot, the tale is told economically (78 minutes) and well, and the actors are all wonderful. The best part is in the first five minutes – filmed at the Las Palmas newsstand, with shots of Miceli’s and Musso and Frank and Hollywood Boulevard – so much fun. This Columbia film noir set (volume two) is a total winner so far. I then watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Jason and the Argonauts. It’s actually my least favorite of the Ray Harryhausen films. The real problem is that it’s dramatically inert – a conflict is set up at the beginning and once Jason goes on his merry way to get the fleece, it is never referred to again. And then the film just stops, as if there was going to be part two. Really odd, I must say. That said, there are still some fun sequences, and the Bernard Herrmann score is up to his usual great standards. The transfer is spectacular – Columbia is regularly doing the best Blu-Ray transfers around and this one is really stellar. It’s doubtful this film ever has looked this good. The color is perfect, and the non-optical shots are pristine and sharp as a tack. But there are a LOT of multiple pass opticals in the film and those are, as they should be, softer and grainier. It’s really a perfect transfer.

So please forgive this helpless haze I’m in
I’ve really never been
In love before

See what I’m talkin’ about? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below before I sing the entire song all over again.

Today shall be a totally restful day. I’ll pick up my dry cleaning, do a few early errands and whatnot, and then just sit on my couch like so much fish and watch a few motion pictures. Tonight, I’m seeing a singer at the M Bar in Hollywood. I have no real idea what I’m in for – this is someone I know from somewhere who invited me on Facebook, and I’m sure it will all come back to me when I see her.

Tomorrow, I’ll deliver a big box o’ CDs to the local dealer, drive around aimlessly in my motor car, and then I’ll eat something light but amusing and watch motion pictures.

This week, which looked easy breezy, is turning busy, with my dance card filling up with several meetings and meals – I’ve been very good about writing everything down, so hopefully I haven’t missed anything.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a restful day, pick up dry cleaning, dine, and see a show. Today’s topic of discussion: Songs stuck in your head – has that ever happened to you? A song that you cannot get out of your head – if so, which song and how long was it stuck? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I sing one last chorus of I’ve Never Been in Love Before.
