July 21, 2010:

THE CITY THAT ALWAYS SLEEPS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it never ceases to amaze me that in this little city in which I live, Los Angeles and its environs, that it is impossible to go for a little food after a show on a week night. Why? Because unlike the city that never sleeps, this is the city that always sleeps, the most boring late-night major city anywhere. I mean, I went to a play reading and got out at ten-fifteen. I called The Daily Grill. Closed. I called Hugo’s. Closed. My choices then were Jerry’s and Du-Par’s and I wasn’t about to go sit in either of those places. So, I ended up at Gelson’s buying totally stupid food because this city SUCKS, late night dining-wise. I give this city one star, late night dining-wise. This city makes me want to vomit on the ground, late night dining-wise. I was really quite irked and an irked me is not pleasant. Luckily, there was no one around me so I just ranted to myself as I drove in my motor car. All I wanted was a nice salad or grilled artichoke at the Daily Grill and instead I have to make low-cal, low-fat hot dogs and have some righteous red potato salad with them, even though it looked like it had been sitting in the Gelson’s deli case all day long. I hope it doesn’t make me sick, but I’ll tell you what DOES make me sick – what makes me sick is the sorry state of affairs in terms of late night dining in this major city. End of rant.

I had a pretty busy day. I got up early and did a four-mile jog (the long jog), then the helper came over and addressed the rest of the packages and got the postage on them. We then futzed with my Epson printer, which has been giving me oodles of problems and the helper agreed that we had to go get a new printer. So, we moseyed on over to Staples and got a nice HP printer that does everything you’d ever want. The helper set it up and got it working perfectly and it is so much better than the Epson. The latter was flimsy and problematic in every way – this thing is smooth as can be and also much faster than the Epson. The helper then left and I began working on the first Kritzerland at the Gardenia show. We’re still waiting on word from two performers, which will complete our cast if they both say yes. Meanwhile, I’m thrilled to welcome former original Plaid David Engel to the cast – he’s fantastic, a really nice guy, and will just be great. Then it was time to drive to West Hollywood to do the Skip E. Lowe show. In fact, I was a little late getting out of the house, which made me flustered and I forgot my cell phone. That was most annoying, but not quite as annoying as the late night dining situation.

Skip was in fine form and it was really kooky and fun. I just went whatever wacky place he went and I was very quick and made him laugh, which is surprisingly difficult. We talked about the book a lot and also my directing and writing – he asked about the TV shows I’d done and we dished a little. It all went by very quickly. I then hurried home, answered e-mails, and had to go right back out to see the play reading. I’m going to say that I basically don’t like seeing play readings, especially ones that attempt simple staging, which suddenly makes it seem like we’re seeing a half-assed community theater production. I’d rather have the actors sit and read the script aloud so that they can concentrate on the words, rather than worrying about where they’re standing. Our very own Doug Haverty wrote the play (I gather it’s been produced before) and he’s an accomplished playwright, but the cast wasn’t especially right for their roles and so it was really hard to judge the play, but then unless I’m seeing a well done production it’s always hard for me to judge a play.

After that, we had the debacle of trying to find some foodstuffs. I ate the crap I made, and then a moon pie for a sweet. I have now run nine days in a row and I don’t think I’ve lost one single pound – maybe I have, but it sure doesn’t feel like it – and I’ve been eating under 1500 calories a day for sure. Maybe it will finally start coming off this week.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because like the city that always sleeps I need to get my beauty sleep.

Today is a shipping day – with two different CDs going out, so there will be a lot of boxing up and lugging. I have a lunch meeting that I have to leave for at noon, so if we haven’t finished by then, then the helper will do the rest on her own. What a difference a good helper makes – someone on the ball and dependable. Now if she could only get some restaurants to see how stupid they are, that would be the icing on the Popsicle. My lunch meeting is at Barney’s Beanery, and then I’ll be coming right back to the San Fernando Valley – I’ll do an afternoon jog, and then finally relax a little and watch a motion picture or two.

Tomorrow, I have to write some liner notes (these for a non-Kritzerland release – the guy just likes my style and since I like the film in question, I said yes), and then get back to the script I’m writing with David Wechter. Friday I’m seeing the opening night of Cinderella, which features Miss Sally Struthers and Miss Marcia Wallace. I’ll be attending with our very own Mr. Barry Pearl and there’s a little partay after at Brent’s Deli.

I believe this weekend is the Hollywood Show and I guess I’ll stop by and see what’s what, even though I find the show completely loathsome now.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, package CDs, ship CDs, have a lunch meeting, do a jog, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, as we sing the glories of LA, LA – the city that always sleeps.
