THE THING WITH THE PERIODS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, at what point in time did the thing with the periods start. You know what I mean – when people start doing this kind of thing: I. Don’t. Know. Why. I’m. Putting. A. Period. After. Every. Word. Someone had to begin this “style,” which I find completely annoying. And. I. Mean. That. So, who can answer the question as to who made it popular because the one thing we know is that millions of people had to copy it from somewhere, and I’m just endlessly curious as to where and when, which is also the title of a wonderful Rodgers and Hart song. So. I’ll. Wait. For. An. Answer. I’ve wanted to write about this phenomenon for a while, but I got a movie on Blu and Ray and the critic quote on the front reads: Best. Vampire. Movie. Ever. So, there you have it – I expect one of you brilliantly brilliant dear readers will illuminate me. Whilst I’m waiting to be illuminated, I’ll just say that yesterday wore me out but good. I got up early, but not early enough to jog. CDs and helper arrived promptly and we went to work, packaging up hundreds of CDs, and doing several big dealer orders. We managed to get it all done by eleven-twenty and we drove over to the postal office and left them all on the loading dock. We then came back and the helper loaded the big boxes into her car and she took them to the UPS Store whilst I moseyed on over to Barney’s Beanery for a lunch meeting. That was a very fun meeting, and it brought very good news for a new Kritzerland release. After the meeting, which was very fun, I came back to the San Fernando Valley, picked up a couple of packages, did some banking, and then came home, exhausted already. I then did a little work on the computer and prepped the new title, which is on the fastest track imaginable to be announced next week. I then did a two and a half mile jog, gave the Kritzerland designer everything he needs for the new release, and then finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Let The Right One In. They’d mentioned this movie briefly in the little interview with Noomi Rapace on The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo release. So, I looked it up, it sounded interesting, and the Blu-Ray was incredibly cheap on amazon.com. Other than it being The. Best. Vampire. Movie. Ever. I found it absolutely brilliant in just about every way. A film that takes its time, doesn’t go for cheap thrills or overt violence (although there is more violence in this film than in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in terms of blood – but nothing stomach churning and nothing I, who hate violence, had to turn away from. In fact, it’s violence like that in Franju’s Eyes Without a Face – sometimes horrifying and poetic at the same time. Briefly, the story involves a twelve-year-old timid boy who has revenge fantasies about the boys who constantly bully him, and a twelve-year-old girl he meets who happens to also be a vampire. It’s very involving, touching, beautiful, funny, and extremely satisfying. In fact, it’s one of the best movies of the decade, if you ask me. I didn’t have any idea that Sweden was turning out incredibly good films like this these days. Of course, this film has already been “remade” by Hollywood (coming in October and called Let Me In) – I’m sure it will turn everything in this film into a crass piece of crap. So, the likes of me is giving this my highest recommendation. Apparently when Magnolia first released this on Blu and Ray they had terrible English subtitles that bore little reflection to the theatrical English subtitles shown in theaters. They got so much flack for it, that they issued a fixed disc (the back of the package says “Subtitles – Theatrical”) – amazon is selling the fixed version. The direction, photography, music – all stunning. And the performances by the two kids are absolutely amazing.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst I await someone illuminating me about the thing with the periods.

Today, I’m happy to say is almost a totally free day. I don’t know how that happened but I’m really happy about it. I’ll do some writing (script and liner notes), maybe have a lunch with a friend (waiting to hear), do some errands and whatnot, and jog, but basically I’m free to be you and me.

Tomorrow, I have stuff to attend to, and then I’m going to the opening night of a production of Cinderella. Mr. Barry Pearl invited me as his date, and I think it will be fun to see the show and got to the opening night partay after. I will, of course, have a full report.

Saturday, I’ll probably go to the Hollywood Show, even though I hate it. I’ll just say hey to my dealer friends and see if there’s anyone I know there. Not sure what else is happening on the weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, do some writing, do some errands and whatnot, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite vampire movies? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and let’s find out who began the thing with the periods.
