ARBITRARY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, perhaps someone can explain the following phenomenon to me: How come I’m just as full from eating a small turkey sandwich and some fries as I was from eating that HUGE Pasta Victor yesterday. That just baffles me. Really, that’s all I ate yesterday – a small turkey sandwich and fries, after which I jogged for a mile and a half, after which I ate a peach and some low-cal ice cream. And yet, I feel like I’ve eaten five pounds of Pasta Victor. You know, as I look at the words “following phenomenon” I wonder why it isn’t phollowing fenomenon. It’s all so arbitrary, isn’t it – rather like these here notes, which are off to a rousing start. In addition to my being very full, I had a very full day, although I can’t really remember much of it. I do know I got up. I do know the helper came and we packaged up quite a few orders and got them shipped out, did some banking, picked up a few packages at the mail place, and finished reorganizing the garage environment in terms of Kritzerland stock. I also listened to our finessed mixes, which, to my ears, sound really good and quite sparkling in their clarity. Monday’s rehearsal pianist (who’ll be musical directing the October show) came and picked up the music and a reference CD. I know there was something else going on right around then that involved several telephonic conversations and some e-mails, but I can’t really remember what. I had my sandwich and fries, I did my jog, I had a little IM session on Facebook, and then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I made it through the rest of the remake of Clash of the Titans. I really didn’t like any of it – as I said yesterday, it looks, feels, smells, and reeks of every other movie being made, from the by the numbers script, to the whispery basso-profundo male performances, and the wispy, whispery female performances (which, I noticed, include Elizabeth McGovern – who she played I have no idea, but whoever it was I most certainly didn’t recognize her), the CGI (give me Ray Harryhausen any day) – this CGI stuff looks faker than anything Harryhausen ever did), the thumping, droning music, the direction cloned from other bad directors – well, you get the idea. For me, a complete waste of time. The transfer is fine, although not quite as fine as the best blu-rays I’ve seen, and the sound is robust in the style of today’s films. I also finished the bedroom motion picture, entitled Dangerous Moonlight, a region 2 DVD from the UK. I’d always wanted to see this film, which stars Anton Walbrook and Sally Gray. The reason I always wanted to see this film is because this is the film for which Richard Addinsell’s brilliant Warsaw Concerto was written (supposedly written by Walbrook’s character). So, I was a sucker for the movie from the main titles, because of Addinsell’s wonderful music. Plus I really like Walbrook, and the story, while different in plot, in feel is like Brief Encounter, so I just enjoyed it for what it was – and oh that Warsaw Concerto.

After the movie, I did some work on the computer and had a long telephonic conversation with our very own Mr. Barry Pearl, who is currently in Dell and AOL hell – I commiserated with him, having been in both hells some years ago before making the switch to Mac, one of the best decisions I ever made.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m beginning to feel that this section is all so arbitrary and I feel we must save some arbitrary for the next section, for a section without arbitrary is, well, arbitrary.

Today, she of the Evil Eye will be here both bright and early and early and bright. I will jog, and then do some errands and whatnot until she leaves. Then I will work on my two sets of liner notes, and do a few other things that need doing. Then I’m joining Mr. Barry Pearl and the Daniel Petries for dinner at the Eclectic CafĂ©, after which we’re going to see Barry’s ever-lovin’ Cindy in a Sam Bobrick play at a waiver theater in North Hollywood. I’m looking forward to all of it.

Tomorrow, it’s just liner notes and the new episode of Mad Men, unless something happens and I end up going to dinner. Monday, we have a rehearsal and then I may take Pam Myers to dinner. Tuesday is another rehearsal and our only stumble-through the show, and Wednesday is show time. The rest of the week is really busy and I’m hoping we’ll be shipping out One-Eyed Jacks toward the end of the week.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do a jog, do errands and whatnot, hopefully pick up some packages and an important envelope, and then eat and see a play. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could build your dream house anywhere in the world, where would it be and what would the house be like? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and do make each and every one of them arbitrary.
