STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I think I shall just write some notes. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I think I, BK, shall just write some notes. Why not? What else am I doing but sitting at my computer like so much fish. So, notes I shall write, starting here, starting now. I had a rather relaxing yesterday. I got up late after nine glorious hours of sleep. I got motivated right away and did a two-mile jog, after which I delivered a box o’ CDs to a local dealer. I came back home and started my first set of liner notes. That took about two hours but I got them finished and they’re fine, I think. I did some finessing of them, then I went to the Subway and got a foot-long spicy Eyetalian sandwich. I hadn’t been to the Subway in a ‘coon’s age, and the sandwich was just what the doctor ordered. I then called the doctor and told him to stop copying everything I do. Damn them, damn them all to hell. Then I watched some episodes of Dragnet (seven more to go), including one that had some great shots of 1968 Century City, including the site that became the Shubert and the Plitt movie theaters – in 1968 it was a dirt lot. Now it’s an office building. After that, I did another mile and a half jog, ate two pork baos (very low calorie, I have to say), then did some more finessing of notes, after which I sent them on their merry way. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched about thirty minutes of the EMMY Awards telecast. It’s quite weird watching it when you have no clew as to who the people are or what the programs are for about 99% of television. The dresses that I saw during my thirty minutes were absolutely horrendous-looking. I just can’t imagine these people look in a mirror and think they look good. They are getting some bad, bad advice. After that, I watched the latest episode of Mad Men – it was fine, but I have to say I just HATE the lead character – he just gets worse and worse with every episode and he’s the lead. Whether he ultimately redeems himself or not, I’m sort of beyond giving a flying Wallenda. There was a fun scene with Peggy and an art director, and I always enjoy scenes with Joan. The previous night, I’d finished watching The Docks of New York, a silent film by the great Josef von Sternberg. I loved every minute of it – it’s the only one I’d seen before, but I didn’t remember much of it. I know our own Druxy didn’t care for the leading man, but I had no problem with him, especially viewing his acting in context of the period. The leading lady was terrific – Betty Compson. I’ll have to look her up and see what else she did. Once again, the photography was spectacular, and the musical score worked really well for this one.

After the Mad Men episode, I did more finessing of the liner notes and then I decided that starting here, starting now I would write some notes, and as you might be able to tell, I was true to my word and my word was true to me. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because starting here, starting now I am done with this section.

Today, I shall get up and do my jog right away. Then I have some errands and whatnot to attend to, and then we begin rehearsing at one. All singers will be here between one and three, and the helper will be here, too, addressing a lot of packages. After all that, I’m sure I’ll need to eat, and then I’ll have more errands and whatnot to do. I hope to see and approve packaging at some point today.

Tomorrow, we have a stumble-through the entire show with our actual musical director. I’ll be working with him first, and then everyone arrives, then whoever wants to stay and run stuff can. Then Wednesday is show time – I’m really hoping we have a good turnout for this.

Thursday I have a fun lunch at noon with the Adriana Hofstetter fans, and the Friday is a very busy day. I’m hoping I can get some relaxing done on the weekend.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, rehearse, eat, do errands and whatnot, and then relax. Today’s topic of discussion: I feel like it’s a donuts day. What are your all-time favorite donuts? What was the first donut you can ever remember eating, and was it memorable? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, starting here, starting now. What am I, Maltby and Shire all of a sudden?
