THE RANDY VICAR STORIES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I was thinking about telling the story of The Randy Vicar and the Pudding Cup, but instead I shall write these here notes – besides, I’m thinking of compiling a book devoted to the Randy Vicar stories, which I believe I shall call A Book Devoted to the Randy Vicar Stories. I think it could be a best seller, although if I wanted to insure it being a best seller I should change the title to The Randy Vicar With the Dragon Tattoo. I also must be up bright and early and also early and bright to ship CDs, so I must cut to the chase or cut the mustard or cut something so that I can hit the road to dreamland or, conversely, dream the road to hitland. Where was I? Oh, yes, What I Did Yesterday. Well, I woke up. I really had no choice as big men with big machinery were in front of my house trimming the big tree. The DWP actually pays for them to do so because these trees in front of my house are so huge that the branches and leaves get way too close to the power lines – so they really trimmed them back today and it took about four hours to do so. So, up I got, did some work on the computer, and before I knew it, Miss Alet Taylor and Mr. Shelly Markham had arrived to rehearse. We ran all four of Alet’s numbers, but it was rough going because Shelly hadn’t really listened enough to the CD I gave him, and many of these charts we have do not reflect the album arrangements. So, we had to listen first so he could get the correct feel, and then we ran the numbers, but I asked him to please be prepared for today’s rehearsal, because I don’t want to go through that again. After they left, I did some other stuff around the house, picked up 0 packages and a couple of bills from the mail place, and then I moseyed on over to the West Hollywood Hugo’s to have lunch with a young, aspiring performer. We had a very nice time, I gave her whatever words of wisdom I could, and she’s going to send me some demos of her singing and we’ll see what we can do. She’s coming to the Gardenia show, too, so she can meet some interesting people there.

Well, so much for finishing the notes quickly – I just had a forty-five minute telephonic conversation with a friend who is also a very big film music agent – big things afoot for next year, and we’ll see how it all progresses but it could be very exciting. Where was I? After my lunch, which was quite long, I came back to the San Fernando Valley, did some errands and whatnot and then came home, where I did some work on the computer, did a mile and a half jog, and then sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the first fifty minutes of South Pacific on Live at Lincoln Center. First off, is it really live or was it taped some time ago? I ask because there were quite a few sound problems, and I can’t imagine they wouldn’t have tried to fix them. Also, the camera direction is pretty bad, rarely in the right place at the right time. Mr. Szot has put on some weight since I saw the show. And the new Cable is worse than the old Cable, something I didn’t think would be possible. The TV director, who really should take a course in Directing 101, completely blew the magical reveal of the orchestra during the overture by cutting to the conductor just before it happened – that is truly idiotic. I’ll watch the rest of it tonight probably – my pal Danny Burstein is really good in the show, and I also really like the Bloody Mary. And it sounds like they papered some of the house with the teenagers from the Broadway World message boards – whooping and hollering, which is not the sort of audience reaction you want to hear whilst watching South Pacific.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because now it is really late and I have to be up very early to ship out CDs.

If it wasn’t so damnably late I would tell the story of The Randy Vicar and the X-Box. Today, I shall be up early, I shall package up CDs (with my wonderful helper, of course), and I shall take said CDs to the postal office and the UPS Store. After that, we have two hours of rehearsals – first, Jason Graae, then Damon Kirsche, then Lesli Margherita – I even think Alet is coming back and hopefully our musical director will be on top of things in time for the rehearsal. After that, I have an editing session to start putting together the clip reels for the JMK event in November. At some point, I suppose, I’ll find time to eat something.

Tomorrow seems to be a light day, and I hope I can keep it that way. I’d do some liner notes writing and a few errands and whatnot, but also relax. Not quite sure what’s happening on the weekend, but I’m praying we have our packaging approval by Friday so I can announce on Monday – I’m a little hinky about announcing before approval. I should know more about that today.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, package and ship CDs, rehearse, do a jog, and have an editing session. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could release any movie on DVD or Blu-Ray that hasn’t come out yet, what would you choose and why? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I fall asleep by telling myself the story of The Randy Vicar and the Pruning Shears.
