HORSE SENSE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these notes in a hurry because it is late and I must be up at the crack of dawn to announce the new Kritzerland title. Just so you know, I did end up going back to the book fair yesterday, I did end up doing a little trade, and I’m now the proud owner of a pristine copy of the first UK edition of Elmer Gantry. I already own the true US first, but that has a plain and rather ugly dust jacket with only type on it. The UK has really nice art and is beautiful – and this copy is beyond pristine and looks like it’s never been touched – and it was published in 1927. What are the chances of finding a primo copy of a 1927 book in a primo dust jacket? Nil, that’s what the chances are, and yet that’s exactly what this was. For those who’d like to see it, just visit yesterday’s posts. For some reason, there were several people who knew who I was, and they came up to me and were very nice and very complimentary. I hung out for about two hours and then headed home. I had a sandwich and no fries or onion rings and then a little while later did a jog. I approved the page listing for our new release, did some work on the computer and did some bookroom rearranging, which was fun. Then it was time to mosey on over to a staged reading of a new musical.

Last night, I saw a staged reading of a new musical. Our very own Mr. Barry Pearl played a prominent role and was his usual excellent self. The lead gal was fun (I’d seen her in a show with our very own Alet Taylor some years ago), and the rest of the small cast was fine. The show needs work, but what new musical doesn’t? It has to find its tone and voice and it needs to find a way for the audience to care and invest in its plot and characters. As always with new musicals, that’s the hardest part to get right. A few people I knew were in attendance and I always enjoy that. I sat next to Sam Bobrick and his ever-lovin’ Julie. After the show, Barry and I moseyed on over to Little Toni’s, where I had some bread and the small antipasto salad, which was very good. We had a lot of fun conversation and then I headed home.

And that’s all from the horse’s mouth, baby. What does that mean? That just doesn’t make any sense. Well, I suppose it makes horse sense. What is with all the horse sayings, anyway? From the horse’s mouth, horse sense, beating a dead horse, don’t look a gift horse in the mouth – that’s just way too many horse sayings, don’t you think? They’re all just horse manure, if you ask me, although that’s a horse of a different color. And don’t forget, you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink. I think every saying should have the word horse in it, don’t you? The early horse catches the worm – that’s a good one. The horse is in the pudding – that’s a good one. I think everyone should post a saying using the word horse.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because this section is not making a lot of horse sense.

Today, I shall be up at the horse of dawn to announce our new title. Then I shall either go back to sleep or stay up and hopefully print out lots of orders. I’ll also try to do a morning jog. Then the helper will arrive at ten and we’ll get some stuff shipped out, but most importantly we’ll go to Staples and get music Xeroxed. I then have to make our performers CDRs of the songs they’ll be singing, and then they’re coming to pick up that stuff in the afternoon. I believe we’ve found our fifth cast member and as soon as I have confirmation, then I’ll announce it here first. The evening is mine all mine.

Tomorrow I’m taping some sort of show – I’ll be talking about the book and heaven knows what else. The rest of the week is filled with meetings and meals and shipping and going and doing, not necessarily in that order.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, announce our new title, hopefully print out a LOT of orders, do a jog, package and ship, Xerox music and make CDRs and then eat something fun. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite sayings – and how often do you use sayings? Which did your parents use all the time? And, of course, let’s have some wonderful horse sayings. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, for a horse gathers no moss.
