THUS SPAKE ZARATHUSTRA

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is the waning moments of the gentle evening as I write these here notes. Did I just wax poetic? Any time one uses the words waning and gentle on the Internet I suppose it could be considered waxing poetic. Thus spake Zarathustra. Zarathustra was quite the expert on all things waxing and waning and he was always spaking. Of course, if I’d written the beginning sentence in Brazil, then it would have been a Brazilian wax. Thus spake Zarathustra. What the HELL am I talking about? Isn’t the evening waning and shouldn’t I be writing some notes write about now rather than giving all this free publicity to Zarathustra? Did Zarathustra ever give ME any free publicity? No – with Zarathustra it’s all about Zarathustra. Okay, I’m really tired of typing Zarathustra. In any case, yesterday was just a day of doing one thing after another and I basically never stopped until just a few minutes ago. I got up early, and the helper arrived a few minutes after nine. She packaged up some stuff and then we went to storage and found the charts we needed, after which we returned and did some work on the computer. Then I moseyed on over to Barney’s Beanery in West Hollywood for a lunch meeting. That meeting was a lot of fun and I had absolutely yummilicious mac and cheese. Many things were discussed and I’m sure that we’ll be getting at least three new Kritzerland projects, stuff that’s just become available. After that, I came back to the San Fernando Valley and picked up a couple of packages and no mail, including no important envelope – that will hopefully arrive tomorrow, but since Monday was a holiday, who knows? I then came home and did a mile and a half jog, after which I had to finish the second half of my liner notes, which I did. We had to go to a twelve page booklet for this one – lots of photos and longer than usual notes, as I’m covering two films that are very interesting. I got that sent off to the Kritzerland designer aka Doug Haverty, and then I firmed up the final cast member of our November Gardenia show – Miss Dana Shaw, who was terrific as one of the stepsisters in the recent production of Cinderella that I saw. I also began the preliminary thinking about December’s show. Then I finalized who is singing what so that I can now burn CDs and get the music organized so the singers can pick the stuff up this weekend. After that, I finally sat on my couch like so much fish. Thus spake Zarathustra.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Kamikaze Girls, an import from the UK. I’d never heard of this 2004 film before, but had read a review on some site and it sounded like a lot of fun. And so it is – delightful, really – quirky, off-center, oddball, funky, with candy-coated colors, fun performances, and a very skewed visual style. While it was shot on hi-def rather than film, it has a pleasing look to it. Some of it is very funny and the two lead gals play off each other very well. There’s no way to really describe the plot so I’ll just say it has a similar feel to the US film Ghost World, but it’s a lot crazier visually. The transfer, as you might imagine, looks terrific.

After that, I listened to the new Kritzerland master, which we’re announcing Monday morning, but here tonight at midnight. Both scores sound much improved from their previous CD incarnations, both scores are quite wonderful, and I think people will be very pleased with this release for a couple of very important reasons.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because, let’s face it, thus spake Zarathustra.

I suppose one should make mention of the fact that today is the anniversary of Black Saturday, a day that, for me, will live in infamy. Back in 2001 it was the day I learned just how evil people could be. It is a lesson I will never ever forget and it is why there are no business partners in Kritzerland. The events of that day were so shocking and led to an extremely harmful and hurtful three years – but I survived and I truly believe that karma did the rest to those who did what they did – well, I know for a fact that karma took care of one of the participants but good. One of the ways in which I survived and kept my sense of humor through it all was, of course, the creation of this very website – but we’ll celebrate that event in November, as we enter our tenth year here on the World Wide Web.

Today, I have to burn CDs and organize music so people can come pick the stuff up, then I have some errands and whatnot to do, and then I shall be supping with dear reader Druxy. After that, I’ll be visiting with an art dealer – haven’t seen him in ages and it’s always fun discussing what’s going on in the illustration art world. Tomorrow, I’m having lunch with dear reader Jeanne, and I really need to relax a little, as next week is really busy.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, burn CDs, organize music, give them to the singers, do errands and whatnot, sup, and have a visit. Today’s topic of discussion: I love slapstick comedy – what are your favorite slapstick films – the pie-in-the-face, fall down funny wacky shticky films that you never tire of watching, and you can include short films, too, in case anyone wants to include The Three Stooges – I sure would. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we – thus spake Zarathustra.
