THE NOETS WITH THE MOETS ON THE BALL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, once again it is very late as I write these here noets – well, apparently it IS very late because I don’t even know what the HELL noets are. I suppose some people are poets and some are noets – I, for one, am a noet. In fact, I’m something of a noet all. Wow, it took a long time to get to THAT, didn’t it and I can’t say it was worth the wait – wait – I just said it was worth the wait so apparently I can say it. You see, this is what happens one you begin writing the noets this late – you begin to sound as if you have smoked a Mary Jane cigarette or taken an LSD trip. You begin to sound – psychedelic. In any case, I had a perfectly reasonable day yesterday. I was up at five-thirty in the morning suffering from some minor nausea, but I got back to sleep about thirty minutes later and slept till nine. The helper came and we finally got my old laptop up to date with Leopard (well, I guess Snow Leopard would be really up to date), then got it to recognize my old printer, and now that laptop can be used specifically for printing our shipping labels and postage, all from online from the comfort of the helper’s own home environment if she so chooses to want to do it from there. After the helper left, I toddled over to the local CVS and got my flu shot – it was quick and painless, not necessarily in that order. I then came home and locked in our final cast members for the Christmas Gardenia show (I’ll announce them sometime today, as soon as I get final confirmation from the last gal in the morning) and then I spent the next few hours locking in the guests for our one and only LACCTAA event this year – a panel of the busiest LA musical theater directors, including three people who, in addition to being directors, are also artistic directors of very well-thought of theaters – Lewis Wilkenfeld of Cabrillo Musical Theater, Daniel Henning of the Blank Theater, and Steve Glaudini of Musical Theatre West. Our other two very busy directors are Michael Michetti and Calvin Remsberg. It should be a really fun group, and the event happens on November 20th at noon and is open to everyone. Getting those two things locked up was and is a big load off my mind. Then I did a mile and a half jog (the temperature here has been in the low 90s – some November weather we’re having), and then got ready to be on my way to the Gardenia to see a singer and her act. Prior to leaving, I did watch most of a documentary about Andre Previn – it’s weirdly done, but I’m enjoying it nonetheless.

Last night I went to the Gardenia again – a pleasure not having to worry about a show, I must say. First off, we really have been doing well there – in terms of diners and people who come just for the show – I get tunnel-visioned sometimes and a little crazy about how full the room is. But I happened to glance at the reservation book for the weekend and there is a singer playing there tonight and tomorrow – tonight there was not one reservation on the books, and tomorrow night there was exactly one. So, I’m truly grateful for the people who come out to support our shows, and just wish more of my “friends” would get off their complacent butt cheeks and come on down for a good time. The best part of the evening was having Tom Rolla sit with us for a half-hour, reminiscing about Applause – he was in the show and was the dance captain and he had wonderful stories. I told him how I’d fallen head over heels in love with Miss Lauren Bacall when we’d supped and then worked together briefly in the studio – and Tommy was so happy to hear it, because that was his experience with her. We heard some interesting stories about the attempt to put Rita Hayworth in the show as the first Bacall replacement – it didn’t work out and Anne Baxter was brought in and we got some great stories about her. The show we saw was fine – let’s face it, I’m just not that much of a fan of most cabaret shows I see – sometimes it’s the performer, sometimes the director or person helping the performer create the show – I just find some of these “concepts” so weird and, for me, anyway, they don’t work because there’s not enough context for the songs and if it’s just some vague concept at work, then after four songs you’re basically done and you don’t invest in the performer or the material. The people I see are usually very talented, so it’s not that. But we had a good time and my pasta was pretty tasty, so that was nice. Then I came home and had a lot of e-mails to answer, which I did. And then it was time to write these here notes but since I was so bleary-eyed, I decided to write these here noets, what with being a noet and all.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’ve got to wrap up these here noets with the moets on the ball.

Today, I have to pick up a bunch of tapes for two upcoming potential Kritzerland projects – I am really praying that both will have at least one or two extra bits of material – that would be really helpful so we can call them expanded editions. So, send lots of excellent vibes and xylophones for some fun discoveries, tape-wise.

After that, I just have some minor errands and whatnot to do, and I’ll hopefully have a package or three to pick up, as well as an important envelope. I then have to choose the songs for the Christmas show. Once that’s done, then tomorrow I’ll go to storage and pull the charts. Then I’ll figure out who is doing what, take everything to Staples to get Xeroxed, make CDRs for the cast, and send off a set of charts to Lanny Meyers so he can practice before he comes into town. Then the rest of the day, whatever’s left of it, is mine all mine and I shall watch motion pictures into the evening.

Tomorrow, I pull charts, and I might be going to dinner – don’t know yet. Sunday, I think, is a ME day. And then next week is VERY busy with lots to do, and then on Friday I’ll be on my way to the Land of Port to do the JMK event, and I really hope they fill up the venue with actual people.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, pick up tapes, do errands and whatnot, pick up various and sundried mail, announce our December cast, do a jog, and then watch motion pictures. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, a homegrown 2 CD set of the Joe Raposo/Sheldon Harnick version of A Wonderful Life, done at an all-star Actor’s Fund benefit. It’s very interesting for reasons I’ll go into in tomorrow’s notes. Blu and Ray, White Christmas, Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang, and The Bridge on the River Kwai. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I get these here noets posted so this noet can hit the roet to dreamland.
