WHEN I’M SIXTY-THREE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, will you still need me, will you still feed me when I’m sixty-four. Since I am not sixty-four that is a moot question at the moment. No, I am sixty-three and younger than springtime and older than most of the people I know – put together. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am sixty-three years of age this very day and proud of it. When I look in the mirror I don’t think I look sixty-three. Occasionally, though, I see a photograph and I think I look eighty-three. But people tell me I still have an aura of youth about me and heaven knows I feel better these days than I did ten years ago. I feel fit as a fiddle and also a xylophone. I do not have abs and buns of steel at this moment, but I shall again because old Jews need their abs and buns of steel and also borscht. I can still jog four miles if I put my mind and feet to it and, in fact, I will jog four miles this very day, come hell or high water or heaven and low water. I had a very kookie day before my birthday day yesterday. I got up, and waited for the helper, who never arrived. Since she’s been a great helper with a perfect track record (she did the mile in record time), I was worried something was wrong. I left her several messages, getting more concerned with each. But I had to mosey on over to the Wood of West for an early birthday lunch with dear reader Jeanne. Happily, I had an e-mail right then, which I saw on my iPhone – the helper had misplaced her phone and didn’t know my phone number by heart and she hadn’t been near a computer till that very moment. I was just glad to hear she was okay. I then had a lovelier than lovely early birthday lunch at some place called the Fresh Corn Grill or something like that. I had corn chowder, which, rather than being like conventional thick chowder, was more of a milky chowder. It was very good, this milky chowder. I then had a tostada with, you guessed it, corn, beans, guacamole, and chicken – it, too, was tasty. We had a nice chat and it was all simply too too. I then sat in horrendous traffic for almost an hour as I wended my way to the Wood of Holly to work with John Boswell. It should have been a twenty-minute drive. I had a good work session and was able to figure out a fun opening number for Linda Purl and Greg Harrison – I had about six songs to choose from and the fun part is the three we chose are all by Cole Porter – I love when that happens. Between the two of us we assembled a really nice arrangement in about an hour – I hope they’ll like it. Then we kind of laid out the structure for an Annie Get Your Gun medley for the two of them. Now John has to get the music and then we’ll build it. After that, I came home (again with the horrendous traffic) and picked up no packages, which was very irksome indeed. Then I came home, answered e-mails, and began getting wonderful birthday wishes on Facebook from such nice people, even a few surprises, like Alice Playten, whom I adore. Then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a very strange motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Double Life of Veronique – I found Veronique oblique, frankly, but I kind of just went with it’s dream-like, haunting images and enjoyed the performances and music. I’m not sure what it all added up to or if it was even supposed to add up to anything, but as a mood piece I enjoyed it and there are some truly magical sequences and imagery. The transfer seemed to handle the extreme colors and lighting very well – it was very sharp and detailed and quite pretty.

After that, I talked to paypal again and they suggested escalating my complaint to an actual claim. I wrote the seller via paypal’s complaint system and told him we had to have a response by morning or that per the paypal person I was to file a claim, which means he’ll be dealing with them instead of trying to resolve it in a friendly manner. All I want is the damn item, but this guy simply will not respond or tell us what’s going on – the paypal guy was very put off by the guy’s one and only rather incoherent response. We’ll see if we have a response this morning.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get my beauty sleep and when I arise I shall be a brand new age.

Today, I shall be a new age. So, it’s pretty much a ME day of doing only things I care to do. I shall type up notes for the new book, I shall hopefully have some news about the second Kritzerland release in two weeks and if the news is good I’ll start preparing that title. I shall hopefully pick up several errant and truant packages, and I shall go redeem three See’s Candy gift certificates that I’ve had here – I got the third from cousin Dee Dee yesterday – and the other two are also from her from past birthdays – I just never seem to get around to getting the candy. So, I’ll have three one-pound boxes of dark chocolate nuts and chews and that suits me fine, baby. I’ll watch a motion picture or two and then I’m being taken for a birthday dinner later in the evening – I have no idea where, but I’m looking forward to it.

Tomorrow is a huge shipping day, and then I have a dinner with a film music fan and his wife and a couple they know. I think this fellow has traveled her from China or some far-off exotic place like that. Maybe it was Australia. Somewhere. I haven’t decided where we’re going yet – I think they’ll be in the San Fernando Valley that day, so maybe The Smoke House or some place in that area would be fun. Otherwise, it will probably be Musso and Frank, but I think there’s a premiere in Hollywood and the streets will be insane. Friday I have a lunch, and Saturday I think I’m seeing a new show at some theater and having another birthday dinner.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do the long jog, I must type up notes, I must purchase three one-pound boxes of See’s dark chocolate nuts and chews courtesy of cousin Dee Dee, I must hopefully pick up several packages, and I must have a birthday dinner. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers, whilst I pray that this sixty-third year is filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful, as well as merriment and mirth and laughter and legs.
