January 3, 2011:

THANKS FOR THE RECIPES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because today we have about two thousand CDs to ship and I must be up bright and early and also early and bright for the arrival of both helper and CDs. And with the dawning of this new day, the holiday season is over, although I hope every day will continue to be a holiday of some sort, so that we may celebrate one thing or another every day for the entire year. I had such a lovelier than lovely yesterday. I fell asleep about twelve-thirty and did not arise until eleven-thirty. It was just the sort of good night’s sleep I needed. The rains returned around noon. I futzed with stuff I’d written yesterday, fixing, adjusting, deleting, replacing, and then I moved on to about two and a half new pages. Then I decided to do my field trip and drove into Hollywood. I’m happy to report that in the face of some of the worst and stupidest driving ever, I kept calm, did not have car anger, and just maneuvered out of the bad situations keeping even-keeled as I did so. I actually looked at three locations, but the location of the book’s title was the real purpose of my journey. At that address is an apartment complex now and you would never know that a rather historic building was once there. When I got home I Googled the building that used to be there and hit the jackpot – what I thought was a small thing turned out to be a thing ripe with history, which will give me so much colorful stuff to work with. I then got a telephonic call from the person I was maybe going to have dinner with – she was stuck on the I-5 and had gone two miles in two hours. Later, just before she would have gotten onto the 5, they closed the grapevine and she had to double back over a hundred miles to do an alternate route. It became very apparent dinner would not be happening. Ultimately, I got several more calls and what should have been an easy/breezy drive too almost thirteen hours. She did not get home until eight-thirty. I felt very bad for her, and all I can say is I would have gone absolutely insane had it been me. When I realized that dinner was not happening, I went over to Jerry’s Deli and had chicken soup (I was freezing and thought that would warm me up) and two pieces of rye bread. It was good, although I could only finish half the soup’s broth (I ate all the noodles and chicken). Then I came home and did some more writing, about five more pages. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture I’d TIVOd entitled Strange Invaders, a strange film by Michael Laughlin, written by Laughlin and Bill Condon. It’s certainly an homage to 1950s sci-fi films and I kind of enjoyed it even though it’s not great. The direction was very good, and the cast was solid (Paul Le Mat, Nancy Allen, Diana Scarwid, Louis Fletcher, Ken Tobey, Michael Lerner, Wallace Shawn, June Lockhart and others). One wishes it had more humor (it’s quirky but never really amusing) and a little more to chew on, but I liked it fine. It had a very good score by John Addison, too. I’m going to watch the film Laughlin and Condon made before this, called Strange Behavior.

After that, I did some fixing and adjusting to what I’d written earlier, and then wrote a few more pages, about twelve for the day. I am into the second chapter and the plot is being set in motion. And I’m happy to say that my favorite character from the previous Hofstetter book is coming back.

Vixmom asked if I would post the recipe for Wacky Noodles and happily Jose found my original posted recipe for it from January 11, 2003, which was a recipe day here at haineshisway.com – and what incredible recipes we had that day. I’m now thinking of collecting all the recipes we’ve had over the years and doing an haineshisway.com recipe book.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get the notes posted early so I can get to the bedroom environment for my beauty sleep.

Today, at least the first half of the day, will be devoted to shipping two thousand CDs. Once that’s done, I’ll hopefully pick up some mail and packages, do some banking, and I’m really hoping I hear about tapes and projects today because I really need to get moving on our next release. So, send excellent vibes that I hear good things from the person who needs to arrange the tape pickup and good things from our licensors. And, of course, I’ll write some pages (hopefully at least five, but I’d be happier with eight to ten), do a show order, and then eat something light but amusing.

Tomorrow, I have writing to do during the day, and then we have our first Gardenia rehearsal – that begins at four and goes till about seven, at which point The Singer comes and we begin stitching together her act and talking about the patter and what that needs to be. That rehearsal should only run an hour to ninety minutes. The rest of the week will be filled with writing, prepping a release, a couple of meetings and meals, and then our next rehearsal on Friday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, ship two thousand CDs, I must write, I must hopefully pick up mail and packages, I must do other errands and whatnot, I must eat, and I might even jog if the rain has abated. Today’s topic of discussion: Simple – I was so entranced with the 2003 recipe day that I think today we will do the same thing – post your favorite recipes (don’t repeat anything from that 2003 day) – we have many new dear readers since then, so I’m sure we can have lots of yummilicious recipes. If we’re to have a book, we need a substantial number of recipes for it. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland and think of recipes.
