March 20, 2011:

THE ACT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, The Singer did herself proud last night. It was a wonderful show, wonderfully performed. The audience ate her up, seemed to like the songs, and there were lots of laughs, some of which were so big it actually seemed to take her aback. There were three showstoppers – one was Ya Got Trouble – I thought it would be really fun for a gal to do the number and boy was it. And something we call The Overdone Medley wherein we do very short snippets of the most overdone songs in cabaret. Her opening number had everyone smiling – Dancing All The Time from Big. Since The Singer is very tall (5’10” in her stocking feet), I gave her a bunch of tall jokes and snippets of songs and all that went over like a dream and all that leads to the third showstopper, which was actually the first thing I thought of for the act – she does Short People and it absolutely killed. And the double fun of it is that John Boswell, our MD, is 6’5″ in his stocking feet. The structure of the act is very strong, and with a few more performances under her belt it will be second nature to her. There were only a couple of times where her nerves got the better of her, but those couple of moments passed quickly and she handled it very well. She goes to Palm Springs next weekend – I wish I could be there since it involves a new pianist, but I have a book signing that day at the Paperback Show. But I’ll be available by phone if there’s anything funky going on that I need to talk to the guy about. Then we come to New York in early May to do the Metropolitan Room, and I’m hoping lots of you hainsies/kimlets can attend. There was a lovely crowd – some of The Singer’s family, and our very own Adryan Russ, Doug Haverty (and daughter Hartley), Shelly Markham, Andrea Marcovicci (there with her mother), Juliana Hansen, and lots of other nice folks. We also videotaped the show, so that’s always a really good tool for learning where things are strong and what areas still need nurturing. But all in all, a stellar performance by an excellent singer – she’s also rather beautiful so that doesn’t hurt either.

Prior to that, I’d had a good night’s sleep, but woke up feeling very stuffy. I took an Alavert and squirted some Afrin and I felt better soon thereafter. I had some matzo brei to tide me over until the show, and I picked up no packages but thankfully the important envelope was there. I got that to the bank, and then I began listening to the new master, most of which sounded great, but some of which needs a little TLC – these old shows were sometimes recorded so hot that there’s occasional “sizzle” on S’s and soft C’s – like bad sibilance – it happens on about five tracks and I sent my suggestions on how to deal with it – if we can’t, it’s not that bad, but I think we’ll be able to minimize it, at least that’s my hope. After listening to both sequences of our next film score release I opted for my new one. Interestingly, this score was first released on LP and the LP was considerably shorter than the CD – the interesting part is that when I looked it up online and saw the sequence, with one exception it matched mine perfectly – which means the LP was sequenced in film order for those cues. When the CD was done, the new tracks were just dropped in wherever the dunderhead who did it felt like dropping them in. The film order causes the music to also tell a story – it’s not all bombast, which is how the CD played it – I understand that theory – frontload the top of the CD with exciting stuff, but for this score it’s just not optimal.

Then we did our quick sound check and that was my day and that was my evening and this is your life and they went thataway and in case you hadn’t noticed I have lost my mind and am writing a very long run-on sentence which is a very unseemly thing to do but it’s late so why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I need my beauty sleep and so here’s a period just in the nick of time.

Today, I’m meeting some friends at some well-known trendy waffle place at ten-thirty. I suppose I’ll have a well-known and trendy waffle whilst there. After that, I’ll come home and relax and get everything ready for our new release announcement, which will go live at midnight. It is my intention to watch some motion pictures and it is also my intention to not do any work. We’ll see how that goes.

Tomorrow, I have a partay to go to in the evening, and prior to that I have tons of errands and whatnot to do, and a lot of organizing. I just replaced the musical director on our next Gardenia show, so we have to get the new one all the music and a CD – hopefully the guy we replaced will just hand it off to him. The rest of the week will be consumed with meetings and meals and prepping the soundtrack release that follows a week from tomorrow.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, eat a trendy waffle, I must relax, I must prep our new release announcement and I must watch a motion picture or three. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland where I will hopefully dream of lovely things.
