WHEN IT WANES IT POURS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, has anyone noticed that we are in the waning days of March? How can that be? I guess when it wanes it pours because this month has flown by, like a gazelle drinking an apple martini. Yes, soon it will be a little month I like to call April, so April is what I will call it and contrarians be damned. Contrarians Be Damned – that’s the title of my next novel. I gotta tell you. Here’s what I gotta tell you – yesterday was quite a nice day. There, I’ve said it and I’m glad. Almost everything about the damn day was nice. There was simply not a damn thing wrong with the damn day or evening, for that or any other matter. I got up at six and announced our new title. Within the first hour, I knew we were going to have a fairly quick sellout for this title, and, as the day waned, that certainly proved to be correct. In fact, we will be completely sold out by morning, probably by ten or eleven, depending on the orders that come in overnight. So, that was a very good thing, and the best part of it was that we got more orders on the website than ever before for a soundtrack – that’s a very good sign and bodes well for our next release, which I know will sell out even quicker, because it involves a major horror cult film. I did manage to go back to bed and get another three hours of sleep.

Then the helper came over and we did a Costco run, where I ran into one of our favorite singers, Miss Kim Huber. I got water, Diet Coke, batteries, soap, Fruity Snacks, macaroons, and some pansies and hanging flowers. The helper then did some shipping and very nicely planted the pansies near the Jacuzzi – they look great there.

I then did a little work on the liner notes for our next release, and kept printing out lots and lots of orders. At two-fifteen I moseyed on over to Hugo’s, for which I had a hankerin’ – I didn’t know if I’d be able to get in, but I did, and got a larger table, too. I had yummilicious pasta papa (really good batch) and my small Caesar salad – very filling. Then I went to the postal office and picked up some packages but not the Fed Ex package with the missing part. While it was put into a Fed Ex mailbox on Saturday, it in fact didn’t get picked up until yesterday at around five. But it’s supposed to be here by three today so all will be well and well will be all.

I printed out more orders, had a couple of business telephonic calls, answered e-mails, and then the musical director arrived and we spent an hour going over some arrangements and doing a few adjustments here and there. He has a little homework to do now. Then the first of our singers arrived, our guest star, Miss Sharon McNight. She’s doing one song, Poor Unfortunate Souls, which she’s sung before. She’s just fantastic and hilarious. After her came Miss Alet Taylor. How much do I adore this woman? LOTS. She needs to really buckle down Winsocki with her songs, but they’re perfect for her and she’ll deliver them brilliantly. She’s doing Part Of Your World, The Life I Never Led (from Sister Act), and These Are The Good Times (which we premiered on Laurie Beechman’s second album). She was followed by Roger Befeler, who happens to be the husband of Kim Huber. We did a quick arrangement of one of his songs and ran his other two – he’s doing A Little Patch Of Heaven (from Home On The Range), If I Can’t Love Her (he played The Beast on tour), and the beautiful Take Care Of My Heart. Then came the adorable Melody Hollis, our twelve-year-old favorite – I gave her a great song and she is already slamming it out of the park – she’s doing I Want To Be A Rockette – we worked on some little bits and phrasings – this girl is just amazing and we’re seriously getting to work on her act very soon. Then Dan Callaway arrived and we ran his three songs: Out There (from Hunchback), Pink Fish, and Santa Fe (from Newsies). Dan has become one of my favorite performers and favorite people – just a joy to work with. Then came Kirsten Chandler. We ran her three songs – Somewhere That’s Green (she did this in our Menken/Schwartz benefit and brought down the house), Stop and See Me (from Weird Romance – a gorgeous song), and Growing Boy. And we ended our rehearsal with Juliana Hansen, who did Belle (the arrangement I did for Michelle Nicastro), a put-together of A Place Called Home and Home, and A Happy Working Song (from Enchanted – Juliana did the first public performance of the song in our Menken/Schwartz benefit, weeks before the film had come out). It’s going to be such a fun show. The first rehearsal’s always a bit rough but by Friday the MD and singers should all be a little further along and things usually go much smoother there. But, for me, I’m like a kid in a candy shop – I just love sitting here and listening to these incredible voices. Not much makes me happier.

I heard from The Singer that the Palm Springs show went very well, which is a good thing since there were no friends or family there. Then I printed more orders, ate a macaroon, had a candy bar, and one package of Fruity Snacks.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must try and get a good night’s sleep because we’re in the waning days of March and I must be bright and perky for the oncoming month of April.

Today, I’m not sure what’s happening, other than we’ll be selling out of Pirates, I’ll be finishing liner notes, I’ll be eating, I’ll hopefully pick up several packages and the all-important Fed Ex package. Then I have a person coming to install the missing part and do a little work on the item that was delivered (and yes, I’ll be talking about it very soon).

Tomorrow, I have an early meeting with the head of the LACC Theatre Academy – we’re going to try and iron out a few things and I’m hoping the meeting goes well. Then I’ll finish my liner notes and get that packaging in the works. I’m still trying to get ahead by two titles although that seems like it’s going to be very difficult to make happen. Still, one is ever hopeful. The rest of the week will be meetings and meals and a rehearsal. I have no idea what the weekend holds.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, sell out of Pirates, I must finish liner notes, I really must try and jog, I must hopefully pick up several packages and the all-important Fed Ex package, and I must have a person install a missing part and do a little work. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could play any instrument (that you don’t already play) what would it be and why? And why haven’t you learned to play said instrument? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland as March marches to its conclusion.
