HOW I SPENT MY EASTER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because I must be up to announce the two new Kritzerland releases at six in the morning. Besides, it really shouldn’t take that long to tell you about yesterday since yesterday, for me, began at twelve-thirty in the afternoon. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, slept until twelve-thirty in the afternoon, having fallen asleep at one the night before. I guess my lack of sleep and all I’ve been doing finally caught up with me and so getting that much sleep was a necessity. I actually felt much better yesterday than I have been, so that was nice. This was how I spent my Easter: I didn’t really have time to do much before having to mosey on over to the home of Barry Pearl’s ever-lovin’ Cindy for Easter dinner. I answered e-mails, played the piano, visited with the Easter bunny, and finished prepping our eBlast. Then it was time for the dinner partay. I was actually the first to arrive, followed by Sean and Robin Spence, two very talented and lovely people I met through Barry and Cindy. Robin took part in the Nudie Musical reading we did, playing Eunice. Then came our pal Kenny Morse, followed by Ilona Simon-Muller, her ever-lovin’ Steve and son Daniel. We chatted for a while and then dinner was served and it was really excellent. A nice light salad, a brilliant brisket, mashed potatoes and asparagus. I didn’t overeat – I had one helping of everything but the brisket – had to have two helpings of that, but they weren’t huge. That was followed by three desserts – I had a little of each. Kenny, funnily, brought our beloved Parisian cake – who knew he also loved said cake? Cindy made apple crisp and Ilona made a Passover friendly strawberry shortcake with yummilicious fresh whipped cream. All three were tasty and it took all my willpower to not keep eating them – as it was, I was stuffed to the gills and beyond. We all talked to Barry on the phone – his show opens Wednesday night, and from what I understand, it doesn’t really matter what the reviews are like, as Warner Bros. is going to keep this open no matter what and heaven knows they certainly have the dough to do it.

After the partay, I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish. I decided to listen to Michael Ritchie’s commentary track on The Fantasticks. He never mentions anything about the film being shelved, he never mentions Mr. Coppola – he does have some interesting things to see, including one complete fabrication about Jean Louisa Kelly’s being shot out of a cannon. Obviously they didn’t really shoot her, but they had a wire stunt gag where she flies a distance and ends up with El Gallo on a high perch. According to Mr. Ritchie, Jean Louisa did her own stunt and flew on the wires. Unfortunately for Mr. Ritchie and his fabrication, I’d just heard the real story of that stunt at the Easter dinner – Robin was Jean Louisa’s stunt double on the film and did that stunt and one other. What are the odds of one of the dinner guests being the stunt double on a film I’d just watched, and then listened to erroneous information on the commentary track? Now the truth is known. Then I watched all the deleted scenes, none of which should have been cut by the grimy mitts of Mr. Coppola. The film originally ran 111 minutes – since five of those minutes were the end titles, it really wasn’t that long. The film now runs eighty-six minutes with the same five minutes of titles. That’s way too short and the film feels way too choppy. I’ve got to find my VHS tape and have it transferred to DVD – I suspect that this film works better in 2011 than it did in 1995.

After that, I listened to and approved the Camelot master, with two little fixes, which he’ll make before sending it out. Then I made a few editing decisions on an upcoming project – still have to do the first half, but I’ve done the entire second half, which will cut the forty tracks in half to twenty.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I am still sated and in need of as much sleep as I can get between now and six in the morning.

Today, I shall be up at six to announce, then I’ll go back to bed and hopefully get a few more hours of sleep. Then I hope to print out a LOT of orders, which would and hopefully will be very helpful to Kritzerland. Then I’ve got errands and whatnot to do, a jog to do, hopefully some packages to pick up, and a little bit of writing. Other than that, I’ll relax as much as possible and I’ll definitely watch a motion picture.

Tomorrow we have our first Gardenia rehearsal, and the rest of the week there are meetings and meal, God of Carnage, and another Gardenia rehearsal.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, announce, hopefully print out a LOT of orders, do errands and whatnot, jog, eat something light but amusing, hopefully pick up a package or three, and relax. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite Schmidt and Jones songs? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland after such a nice Easter day and night.
