April 4, 2011:

THE BEST LAID PLANS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is Monday, the day after Sunday and the day before Tuesday. I just thought I’d pass that along, in case anyone of you dear readers was confused. Of course, as always, I thought Sunday was supposed to be a day of rest, and that’s what I’d planned, but sometimes the best-laid plans go awry. So my Sunday, which was supposed to be, according to plan, a day of rest, was anything but a day of rest. I got up around nine-thirty after a very nice night’s sleep with peculiar but not off-putting dreams. I then did a little proofing, finding one huge whopper that no one had caught, not that it was easy to catch as it involved a product. I’d changed my mind about the product after I’d written that section, but had left one reference to the first product I’d chosen, and no one had caught it – thankfully, I’m going through this very methodically. I’m also removing about fifty em dashes as I really overuse them. I leave the ones I like, but when I find six on one page, I’m removing four of them. I then went on a field trip to take some photographs for the appendix of Adriana’s Photos that we’re doing. Whilst photographing one of Adriana’s favorite eating places, Astroburger, I decided to lunch there, having their yummilicious bacon cheeseburger and zucchini fries with extra white sauce (I actually didn’t use the extra). After that, I came home and wrote my contextual commentary for Wednesday’s Gardenia show. That took about two hours, but it’s done and I’m sure I’ll be finessing it as I always do between now and show time. Then I proofed another chapter, and then I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Kids Are All Right. I’m not so big on these sorts of Oscar-bait films, but as Oscar-bait films go this one was okay. I liked Annette Bening, but Juliana Moore just kind of gets on my nerves every time I see her in a film. I did like the young teen girl, Mia something-or-other, but the appeal of Mark Ruffalo is entirely lost on me. The writing was okay and not okay, although it sort of got better as the film went along. But it just sort of does the same sort of scene over and over again and about sixty minutes in I was ready for it to be over. The transfer looks fine. The film’s use of obnoxious rock songs for no reason whatsoever was the low point, and the score for solo guitar also annoyed me.

I then proofed another three chapters, answered some e-mails, and listened to some music. So, as you can see, there was not much rest for the likes of me on the day of rest. Oh, well, the best laid plans sometimes go awry. What are laid plans anyway? Why are the plans always laid? That’s a little annoying right there. Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because my eyeballs are weary, as are my bones and my feet, not necessarily in that order. What I need is another good night’s sleep so that I may awaken refreshed and full of vim and vigor and vivaciousness (the three Vs). I need to have pep and punch and pizzazz (the three Ps). And I need to know why the plans are getting more action than I am.

Today, I must do some shipping, and then I have a lunch meeting at Mo’s at noon. I will try to be good and have their Chinese chicken salad. If I am not able to be good, then I will most likely have a grilled cheese and bacon sandwich or perhaps a pasta dish of some sort. We shall see. After that, I will hopefully pick up some packages, and after that I will come home and continue carefully proofing. I want to finish by Wednesday or Thursday so we can do the fixes and get this thing off to the publisher.

Tomorrow, I may have even more shipping to do, and then we have our stumble-through rehearsal with the entire cast, which is always grand fun. After that, I’m hoping someone will want to go grab something to eat. Wednesday, we have our sound check and then it’s show time. I’m going to see how many people have reserved today, to see if I need to get on people’s cases. But Juliana alone has fifteen people coming, and with my usual four that’s nineteen, so that’s quite a nice start, and I’m quite sure others have made reservations, too.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do some shipping, have a lunch meeting, hopefully pick up some packages, perhaps jog (weather permitting), and proof. Today’s topic of discussion: I think it’s time for a food topic, even though we’ve done them all. So, what are your favorite sandwiches? Where have you eaten the best sandwich ever? What was it? What are your favorite sandwiches to make and how do you make them? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I ponder why the plans are always the best laid, whilst the elderly Jews sit on their couches like so much fish.
