I HEART NEW YORK AND I’M ON MY WAY HOME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was a whirlwind day and evening in the city that never sleeps and now I must write these here notes in a hurry so I can get some beauty sleep and then be on my way to the airport and then back to the City of Studio. So, please send your most excellent vibes and xylophones for a safe, secure, and on-time flight, as well as excellent weather from here to there. My day began with a recording session with Mr. Skip Kennon. We had two singers – first up was Jenn Collella (sp?), whose work I didn’t really know at all. She did a terrific job and was really nice and fun and professional. Then Judy Kuhn arrived, feeling a bit tired, but after a few warm up takes she was her usual magical self – what a voice this woman has, and she’s just a pleasure to be around and work with.

After that, Skip, FJL, and I went to a little nearby jernt – they had some food and we had a lovelier than lovely chat. Then I moseyed on over to meet with choreographer Adam Cates to discuss a project he’ll be working on with me. We met at the Brooklyn Diner and he ate and I had a few bites of cole slaw.

Then I moseyed on over to Sardi’s, where I went upstairs and met Mr. Barry Pearl and some of his chums for a meal. I had a cobb salad and we had a lot of fun. Whilst there, I saw Brad Oscar and his ever-lovin’ Diego, and John Tracey Eagen, who I’d never actually met but who did an Unseemly Interview years ago right here at haineshisway.com. Then I quickly came back to the hotel to change shirts, then I went back to Times Square and to the Broadhurst Theater to see Baby, It’s You.

Last night, I saw a Broadway show entitled Baby, It’s You, starring Miss Beth Leavel and our very own Mr. Barry Pearl. For those who read my thoughts on the show when I saw it in Pasadena, nothing’s really changed – it’s simply not my favorite kind of show. I will say that it’s much better than the Pasadena production, and they’ve really spruced it up for Broadway. The songs are fun, and the audience, primarily made up of aging boomers, claps and sings along. The funniest moment of the evening was watching an elderly gentleman in the first row clap on one and three, instead of in rhythm on two and four. Barry does a terrific job in a repetitively written role, and they’re lucky to have him. Beth Leavel is terrific, once again taking sketchy material and really finding nice ways to flesh it out. The rest of the cast does well, and the real problems lie where they always were – with the book and the co-director. They are lucky to have had Sheldon Epps there, who knows what the shape of a musical is.

After the show, Barry, The Singer, and I went to Angus McIndoe across the street. I haven’t been there in ages, and I really must start going there regularly. I had some shrimp, crab and lobster – cold, with cocktail sauce and just great. We saw a few interesting folks, including Walter Charles, Rob Bartlett, Michael McGrath, Michael Park (the latter two I worked with when I did the Little Me cast album) and it was just ever so much fun. It’s days like that when I truly heart New York.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get some beauty sleep.

Today, I shall arise at nine-thirty, finish packing (I did most of the packing yesterday) and then the car will arrive at ten-fifty to take me to the airport and shortly thereafter I shall be on my way home to the City of Studio where lots of packages await, including the new book, which I can then ship out on Friday.

Tomorrow, we have to ship a rather large number of CDs and then I have a work session with the thirteen-year-old and then I’ll eat something light but amusing. Saturday I’ll try to sleep in, and then that afternoon my engineer and I will be preparing for the recording of the Jason Graae show that night. Sunday, I can assure you, will be a day of rest.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be on my way home, I must eat, and I must relax and get ready to ship a lot of CDs. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite girl-group and boy-group songs? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland – and do send those excellent vibes and xylophones for a safe, secure, and on-time trip, along with excellent weather from here to there.
