MAY I

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, may I just say that it is May? Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, may I just say that it is May. Is that not amazing? This year is flying by, like a gazelle throwing a shot put. And now it is May – and May I just say that I hope and pray that May will be a month filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful. The last day of April was fine and dandy and also dandy and fine. I had a good night’s sleep, answered e-mails, did a two and a half mile jog, did errands and whatnot, finished writing my contextual commentary for the Gardenia show and then it was time to rehearse with the now thirteen-year-old. We ran through all the numbers and while we haven’t begun to structure the show yet, the material is really fun. She sang the song I wrote for her opening number and she does it great. I lowered the key a half step and she still has to fix a couple of wrong notes, but it’s really just a perfect little song for her that captures her to a T or, at the very least, a W. And then it was time to mosey on over to Ruth’s Chris steakhouse for her birthday dinner. Her mom, dad, and brother were in attendance. They sat us a a nice big table and the first thing that happened was a tasty shrimp appetizer arrived as a courtesy from my friend Lauren Rubin, who is a server there (she wasn’t working last night, though) – that was very sweet and the shrimp was very tasty. We all ordered our steaks – three of us had the New York and Melody and mum had the petit filet mignon. I started with the lettuce wedge and their yummilicious thousand island dressing. I can only tell you that when the steaks arrived sizzling in butter, we were all very happy eaters and we all devoured every bite of our steaks. We also had an assortment of side dishes that we shared between the five of us – I was very pleased with the restraint that I showed with the side dishes. We had creamed spinach, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes (I had only a bite of the sweet potato thing, and no mashed potatoes), asparagus with hollandaise, and broccoli.

After I finished I was ready to burst and was very glad I did the two and a half mile jog and that I did manage to show some restraint with the side dishes and the bread – their bread is spectacularly good and it was very hard not to just keep eating it. Then they brought Melody three little desserts, one of which had a birthday candle in it. Then we ordered another dessert for the table – I had just a couple of bites and it was really tasty. The conversation, of course, was sparkling, and Melody and I are like two little kids when we’re together and we have a good deal of silly fun.

After that, I came home and did some work on the computer, and then it was the end of April and the beginning of May and time to write these here notes.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I need my beauty sleep so I arise refreshed and recharged and ready for a little month I like to call May, which is, of course, a lusty month.

Today, I must deliver some CDs to a local dealer, and then I have to write and finish the liner notes for our next release. Then I’ll eat something amusing, do a couple of errands and whatnot (I really need to have the motor car bathed), and then I hope I can sit on the couch like so much fish and relax before the very heavy week ahead.

Tomorrow, I have a lot o’ stuff to do, and then a two-hour work session with John Boswell – we’ll be doing a lot of arrangement work for the thirteen-year-old’s show. After that, we’ll probably grab a bite to eat at a nearby eatery. Tuesday is our final Gardenia rehearsal, our stumble-through, and then we have our sound check and show on Wednesday. Then it’s prepping the new release, meetings, and getting ready for my trip to New York. I’m hoping some of our East Coast hainsies/kimlets will be coming to see The Singer’s show at the Metropolitan Room on May 10th. Can someone kind of try to put together a list and then reservations should be made. It would be great to have a haineshisway.com table.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, deliver CDs to a local dealer, jog, write and finish liner notes, and then try to relax and watch a motion picture or three. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland, hoping that we have a lusty month of May that is filled with health, wealth, happiness, creativity, and all things bright and beautiful.
