MONDAY MADNESS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the madness of Monday is at an end, hopefully to be replaced by the tranquility of Tuesday. Oh, yes, Monday was madness, but in the end I think everything sorted itself out nicely. I got another good night’s sleep, and was really glad for three nights in a row, which enabled me to face the madness of Monday with energy and oomph. In the morning, I had bunches of e-mails to answer and telephonic calls to have. I made some changes to the booklet of our next release, approved it, and sent it off to the rights’ holders for their approval. I was so happy to know that next week was not a glutted week in terms of soundtrack releases – in fact, we were it – until Monday Madness took over and my dear, dear friends at Varese Sarabande decided out of the blue without any prior warning to release their latest batch of club titles, all four of them, next week, as well. Wasn’t that sporting of them? I now have to decide whether to release as planned or postpone a week, where I’d be going up against at least two other releases – it really is insanity and I shall now have to be rather merciless with my former label for bad sportsmanship. I just don’t want our release, our ONE release to get lost amidst that craziness – so, we’ll have to see how it goes. After finding that out, I needed food, so I went to Zach’s Eyetalian CafĂ© and had the chopped salad with turkey and a couple of their garlic cheese roles, which weren’t as fresh and yummilicious as usual. The salad was great, though. A pretty calorie-friendly lunch it was. Then I went and picked up two packages and an important envelope, did some banking and other errands and whatnot, and then returned to the home environment.

I then had to really buckle down Winsocki and deal with the Gardenia show. We were hoping to have Michelle Lee as a guest and for a while it looked like she might just do it, but in the end she said she couldn’t. But the rest of the show is now cast – Juliana Hansen, Kim Huber, James Mulligan, Alet Taylor and Andy Taylor, along with the thirteen-year-old Melody Hollis. The only total newcomer is James, who has been asking to be in these shows for months – he’s a friend of Juliana’s and has been to at least four of the shows. I heard him sing and he’s very good and he’ll be a nice addition to our rep company, I’m sure. Then I finalized our song list and set about getting the sheet music. This is one show where I don’t have to pull that many charts from storage, but I do need three or four, which I’ll get today. The others will arrive via e-mail. All of that ate up the entire afternoon, at which point I finally sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled The Comancheros, starring Mr. John Wayne and Mr. Stuart Whitman. Believe it or not, I’ve never been able to get past the first fifteen minutes of this film – I’ve owned it on laserdisc and DVD, but finally I made it past and watched it in its entirety. While not a classic by any stretch of anyone’s imagination, it is, for the most part, very entertaining, well directed by Michael Curtiz (his final film), with wonderful performances from everyone. I’ve always been a Stuart Whitman fan and found it baffling that he didn’t have more of a leading man career than he had. The Duke is great, I kind of like Ina Balin, and we also get Jack Elam, Nehemiah Persoff, Guinn “Big Boy” Williams, Michael Wayne, and in a very showy small role, Lee Marvin. And it’s all wrapped up handsomely in William Clothier’s Cinemascope and color photography, with a rousing Elmer Bernstein score. The transfer is excellent, with very blue skies, just the way we like ’em. It’s sharp, detailed, and I see no cause for any complaints, although I’m most certain there will be some.

After that, I had some tuna (no bread), and a drumstick ice cream bar (I love them dearly). I did more work on the computer, and finally the Monday Madness was at an end. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get my beauty sleep for tomorrow will be a very busy day.

Today, I shall try to do the jog I should have done yesterday, I shall print out sheet music, I shall make CDRs, I shall go to storage and pull some charts, and then some singers will probably come by to pick up their stuff. Along the way, I shall hopefully pick up a package or three, do errands and whatnot, and eat something light but amusing. The evening will depend on the day, and, conversely, the day will depend on the evening and vice versa and also versa vice, not necessarily in that order come hell or high or low water while looking a gift horse in the mouth on the twelfth of never.

Tomorrow, the Gardenia musical director will pick up all his stuff and whatever singers that haven’t picked up their stuff, will. Thursday I have a lunch meeting, and there’s just all sorts o’ stuff that needs to get done. Friday I have a dinner and then a show to see and the weekend is nice and busy, too.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, try to do a jog, print out music, pick up charts, make CDRs, eat, pick up packages, do errands and whatnot, and like that. Today’s topic of discussion: Who are your favorite unheralded and underappreciated actors and actresses? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I hit the road to dreamland leaving Monday Madness behind and looking forward to a Tranquil Tuesday.
