TENACIOUS TUESDAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, Tuesday was anything but Tranquil, but it wasn’t Terrible or Troubling either, rather it was a Tenacious Tuesday in which I got a lot of things done whilst never losing my cool. Have you ever lost your cool? It’s no fun because then you’re left with only your hot or your warm or your tepid. But I had my cool with me, did not lose it, and all was ultimately well and well was ultimately all, not necessarily in that order. My Tenacious Tuesday began with me getting up, which, I thought, was rather Tenacious of me. I printed out some music, then paid some rather large bills, after which I met the helper at storage and we pulled the charts we needed. I then took said charts to Staples for Xeroxing and they told me to come back in an hour. So, I went next door to Jerry’s Deli and had an egg salad and bacon sandwich on egg bread with an egg Diet Coke and egg french fries, which were, I must say, teeny-tiny little fry-lets rather than full-sized fries. After that, I returned to Staples to be told the music wasn’t ready and to come back in thirty minutes – that was rather irritating, but I went to the mail place, picked up two count them two packages, came home, made Andy and Alet Taylor’s CDRs, then went back to Staples to be told they hadn’t even started the order yet. Apparently the oaf who took it forgot to inform whoever was going to actually do it to actually do it, as if he’d never told me an hour and then an additional thirty minutes. The man (the guy who regularly does this for me) was rather mortified and asked exactly which oaf it was and I was happy to tell him which oaf it was and I hope the oaf gets a good and loud earful. The guy then did the Xeroxing while I waited and then he didn’t charge me for it (there wasn’t that much stuff this time), which was very thoughtful of him, since I’d had to come back twice.

Then I went home again, Andy Taylor came by and got his and Alet’s music and CDRs, and then I did a little work on a project I’m working on, had a couple of telephonic calls, and then finally sat on my couch like so much fish, after printing out more music.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Beverly Hills Cop, starring Mr. Eddie Murphy. It was very entertaining when it was first released and it remains just as entertaining now, even though it’s been ripped off many times by many lesser talents. Murphy is great and lights up the screen, and the supporting cast if perfection right down to the extras. It’s one of the few 80s synth scores that I think works, and the whole thing is just a delight thanks to the script (although much of that was improvised), and the direction of Martin Brest, who, after making the equally entertaining Midnight Run, made Scent Of A Woman (which I hated), Meet Joe Black (not much better) and then the much-loathed Gigli – he has not been heard from since Gigli, which was way back in 2003. The transfer, which is getting many brickbats at the usual places, all based on screencaps that do not resemble in any way what I watched on my screen – in fact, I really don’t know what the HELL these people are going on about, and they do a great injustice and cause great harm to many good transfers and they should just shut all these damn boards down because one get so tired of their ignorant armchair expert blather. A year ago it was grain this grain that – now, because they read something somewhere, the new expression is “grain structure” like they have any idea what that pointless and useless phrase means. These people give nerd a whole new meaning – they sit in their homes and pause the image and blow it up or go stand with their nose against the screen and look until they find something that isn’t really there. Not to idiots: Go to a movie theater and put your fershluganah nose up to the screen and tell me how good the 35mm image looks – I’ll save you the trouble – it looks like crap. “Debris,” grain structure,” “crushed blacks,” “DNR,” “edge enhancement,” “film-like,” and on and on it goes, each post more ridiculous than the last. So, I’m here to tell you that Beverly Hills Cop looks just like it should on Blu and Ray – the film was an 80s production and has that look – it doesn’t “pop,” it never “popped,” and this transfer replicates its look very well. The color is what it should be, there are no “halos” or whatever the HELL these idiots go on about – the main titles move around a bit but that’s as bad as it gets. The indoor scenes were shot in low-light and the film was pushed and that’s why they look the way they do. They don’t do weird things to those scenes but not to the rest of the film. Let’s ponder why all the outdoor shots look great – wow, bright light? Wow.

End of rant. After that, I made the rest of the CDRs and am just waiting on the rest of the sheet music to arrive via e-mail. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because frankly I’m seeing a little DNR, debris, and edge enhancement on these here notes, and I feel the grain structure is not very film-like, causing halos and the jaggies.

Today, I shall arise by nine, do errands and whatnot, try to jog (it’s been too chilly for the last few days), then people will be arriving all afternoon to pick up music and CDRs. Hopefully I’ll pick up a package or three, and at some point I suppose I’ll eat a little something.

Tomorrow, I have a lunch meeting and a lot of other things to do, Friday I’m going to the opening of a new musical, Saturday I have a work session and I don’t know what’s what on Sunday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do errands and whatnot, jog (weather permitting), and hand out music and CDRs as well as eat a little something. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we hopefully have a Wonderful Wednesday after the Tenacious Tuesday.
